Rhwng Hwyl A Thaith Ac Yma O Hyd
Dafydd Iwan/ar Log
Album artwork for Dafydd Iwan/ar Log, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover fills the frame, with no border. It is arranged in broad horizontal bands: a deep, mottled red-orange strip at the top; a larger glowing field of orange and golden yellow through the middle; and a dark, turbulent band of purple, black and pale pink along the bottom. The transitions are uneven and painterly, with rough, scumbled edges and grainy surface texture.
Large white lettering dominates the upper half. At the top, the smaller line “dafydd iwan ac ar log” sits close to the edge in bold, lower-case serif letters with a dark shadow. Beneath it, “YMA O HYD” appears in much larger uppercase serif type, spanning nearly the full width. A horizontal stroke crosses the central letters, with a small outlined oval-like detail around the middle. The title overlays the orange field and remains the main focal point.
The central orange area has a rough, stippled texture and shifts from bright golden yellow near its centre to deeper orange and red towards the edges. A muted yellow circular shape, resembling a low sun, sits left of centre. The lower band resembles a set of breaking waves or a stormy sea: black and deep purple brush-like shapes curl across it, edged with lavender and pale pink highlights. A narrow pale strip marks the boundary between the warm sky-like field and this dark band.
Near the bottom, two centred lines of smaller white serif text sit over the dark waves: “21 o ganeuon oddi ar” and, below it, “RHWNG HWYL a THAITH ac YMA O HYD”. The lettering has dark edging or shadow for contrast. The overall image has a painted, poster-like appearance, with visible irregular marks and strong horizontal colour divisions.
What the image evokes.
The warm upper field and dark, curling lower forms invite a reading of sunset over rough water. The small circle could be a sun, though its flat, softly defined shape also feels like a simple graphic emblem. The waves seem to push upwards against the calm breadth of the orange sky, giving the image a tension between stillness and movement.
Its limited palette has the intensity of a theatrical backdrop: fiery reds and golds above, nearly black purples below, with pale pink traces catching the wave crests. The oversized title has a stately, declarative presence, while the rough painted surface keeps the design from feeling polished or remote. The result can suggest both a bold printed poster and a weathered mural, with a sense of drama held in the contrast between luminous colour and turbulent darkness.
