Gore Glas Choir
Album artwork for Gore Glas Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover combines a colour landscape photograph with two salmon-pink framed images on the left. A river runs from the distant centre towards the foreground, its shallow, pale water broken by dark stones and ripples. A broad stony bank fills the lower middle and right; a narrower strip of green grass follows the water on the right and rises into a wooded hillside. Beyond the river, fields and low hills recede beneath a bright, cloudy sky. The scene is framed tightly, with the stream and its banks leading the eye into the distance.
Two roughly rectangular salmon-pink panels are stacked down the left side, overlapping the landscape. Each has an irregular, dark-edged border and a smaller inset rectangle containing a brownish, grainy image. The upper inset appears to show a dark, animal-like form lying or crouching across a lighter ground; the lower contains another dark, angular form, though neither small image is clear enough to identify confidently. Their muted, almost monochrome tones contrast with the greens and cool greys of the photographic scenery. A white band runs across the bottom, separated from the photograph by a straight horizontal edge. The lower panel slightly overlaps this band.
At the top, to the right of the upper panel, large bold blue lettering reads “Cór Gore Glas”. In the white band, centred beneath the landscape, smaller thin dark lettering reads “Mynd ’ân Cân i’r Byd”. Both inscriptions are set on single lines and sit directly over their respective areas of the cover. The overall treatment is mixed: a naturalistic landscape photograph, inset pictures with a rough, print-like appearance, and clean cover text. The image has soft, overcast light, with no strong cast shadows.
What the image evokes.
The river gives the cover a clear sense of movement, yet the stones make that movement feel slow and resistant: water threads around obstacles rather than sweeping them away. The green valley opens towards the upper right, while the stacked pink panels interrupt the view like small pages, plaques or windows laid over a landscape. Their compact, enclosed scenes seem more private and obscure than the expansive river behind them.
There is a gentle tension between the photograph’s recognisable depth and the inset images’ flattened, weathered look. The pink frames bring warmth to an otherwise cool, damp palette, but their dark borders and murky contents keep them from feeling decorative. The arrangement can suggest a scrapbook or a pair of old prints carried into the countryside, though the images remain too ambiguous to settle into a specific reading. The result feels both open and inward-looking: a broad landscape crossed by fragments that invite closer inspection.
