Glanaethwy School Choir
Album artwork for Glanaethwy School Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a large group photograph with curved, abstract framing and prominent Welsh lettering. The photograph fills most of the centre: a sizeable choir of women and men, many appearing to be young adults, is arranged in several rows on a rocky hillside. Some stand at the back while others sit or kneel in front. Many wear black, yellow or gold clothing, with bright yellow dresses and skirts scattered through the group. They face the camera; a few people at the edges are partly cropped by the photograph's sweeping outline.
The group occupies the lower middle of the cover. Rough grey-brown rocks and sparse grass lie across the foreground, while a broad mountain valley rises behind them. The distant slopes are pale green and brown, with a light, hazy sky above. The photograph has a curved, irregular boundary: it arches beneath the title, bulges out towards the right edge, and narrows to a point near the lower centre. Deep purple-black areas surround it, crossed by broad, flowing grey, blue-grey and muted purple bands. These bands are especially visible in the upper-left corner and along the lower and right edges, where they form layered, ribbon-like arcs.
At the top, the large title “YSGOL Glanaethwy” stretches across most of the width. “YSGOL” is in small white capitals at the left; “Glanaethwy” is much larger, in golden yellow, with tall, narrow serif letterforms. Beneath it, centred over the upper part of the photograph, “O FORTUNA” appears in large white capitals with a strong serif style. At the bottom, on the dark purple area, a centred block of smaller blue-grey capitals lists “O FORTUNA”, “AND ALL THAT JAZZ”, “IESU YW”, “ADIEMUS” and “THE CIRCLE OF LIFE”. The cover is a photographic design with graphic shapes and overlaid typography; the photograph itself has natural outdoor light, with a slightly soft, distant background.
What the image evokes.
The design sets a formal, almost ceremonial title against the informality of a large group gathered outdoors. The choir's black and gold clothing gives the photograph a sense of occasion, while the rocky ground and open valley make the scene feel un-staged and exposed to the weather. The bright yellow garments catch the eye like small notes of warmth across the darker clothes and muted landscape.
The curved framing makes the photograph seem to sweep across the cover rather than sit within a conventional rectangle. Its broad arcs can suggest ribbons, folded fabric or a view through an opening; the image feels both expansive and enclosed. The dark purple field lends the composition a theatrical gravity, while the mountain backdrop keeps it connected to a real, open place. The result holds two moods together: polished and grand in its lettering, communal and human in the closely gathered faces and uneven rocky foreground.
