To Where You Are
The Morriston Orpheus Choir
Album artwork for The Morriston Orpheus Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a sunset seascape with large, layered lettering. The horizon sits just below the centre: dark island silhouettes stretch across the water, with a larger low landmass on the left and smaller rocky forms to the right. In front, rippled sea fills the lower half, reflecting narrow bands of muted orange and pale light. Above it, the sky shifts from a bright yellow-orange strip at the horizon to dusky pink, mauve and charcoal-grey clouds higher up.
The word “Orpheus” is the main focal point in the upper-left quadrant. It appears in very large, flowing gold script, with a fine dark outline or shadow. A broad orange-red loop curves around and behind it, forming an elongated oval that reaches from near the top edge to the horizon. Across the top, two lines of pale blue and white uppercase lettering identify the choir in English and Welsh. The title, “to where you are”, spans the lower half in fine, pale grey-white cursive, crossing over the dark sea and extending from the left edge almost to the right. Small credit lines sit near the lower-right corner, in compact uppercase lettering and brighter yellow names.
The image is edge-to-edge, without a visible border. The seascape has a photographic appearance, while the lettering and looping mark are graphic overlays. The typography varies sharply in scale and style: narrow, widely spaced capitals at the top; an ornate, oversized script above; and a long, delicate handwritten-style title below. The dusk colours and dark water provide contrast for the lighter text, while the orange loop visually links the sky and the gold lettering.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the quiet grandeur of a view watched at the end of the day: the sea is darkening, but the horizon still holds a bright seam of light. That contrast gives the image a suspended quality, poised between the last warmth of sunset and the onset of night. The island silhouettes feel distant and still, while the textured water keeps the lower half in gentle motion.
The sweeping oval around “Orpheus” lends the upper lettering a theatrical flourish, like a spotlight drawn in one continuous gesture. Its warm colour echoes the sunset, though its scale and smoothness make it feel distinctly designed rather than part of the landscape. The finer title below answers that flourish with something more intimate: its pale, loose strokes seem to drift across the water. Together, the two scripts balance ceremony with softness. The cover may suggest both an open coastal landscape and a stage curtain lifted around a name, without settling into either reading.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
