Gorau Corau Meibion Cymru / The Great Welsh Male Choirs
Choir
Album artwork for Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines several contrasting scenes in a layered, painterly collage. A large pale, swirling form fills much of the upper-right area, behind a night-time view of a modern building with exposed steel supports and two tall, thin mast-like structures. Dark water or shadow lies beneath the building. Across the middle, warm orange and rust-coloured rock formations and a low stone arch occupy the left, while the right side shifts into a close view of grey stonework with a deep circular recess. A narrow strip of pale, clouded sky and a distant green mountain landscape runs along the bottom.
A cream rectangular title panel with a thin dark outline sits in the upper-left corner. Inside it, a dark blue oval contains three centred lines of white lettering; beneath the oval, a short gold rule separates it from the red-brown English title, arranged over three lines. The text is prominent but leaves the images visible around it. The lower edge of the cover carries several lines of small, pale lettering over the darkened landscape, with two groups of names above a centred Welsh and English inscription.
The colours move abruptly between blue-grey and white in the upper right, fire-like orange and brown in the middle left, and muted greens and blues along the bottom. Cloudy transitions and rough, grainy surfaces blend the scenes together; the result looks like a mixture of photographs and painted or heavily treated imagery rather than a single continuous view. The image has no separate outer frame.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels assembled from fragments of place and atmosphere: monumental stone, open countryside and a brightly lit structure coexist without settling into one coherent landscape. Its shifts from cool, misty blue to furnace orange give it a dramatic, almost elemental rhythm. The pale sweep above the building could suggest wind or weather, while the stony circle and arch lend the composition an older, more mysterious weight.
The title panel is orderly and formal, like a label fixed to a scrapbook of Welsh landmarks. Around it, the images resist that neatness: their edges dissolve into one another, and the different scales make the building seem at once real and dreamlike. The result can be read as a meeting of civic grandeur and rugged terrain, though the collage leaves room for a more personal association with memory, travel or a half-remembered view.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
