A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover combines a black-and-white portrait with a small, brightly coloured graphic at the upper right. A light-skinned man with short, dark, slightly tousled hair fills most of the left and central area. He faces the camera with a broad smile, his shoulders angled slightly towards the viewer’s right. He wears a dark-edged V-neck shirt with closely spaced, irregular horizontal stripes. The portrait is cropped around his waist and at the top of his head, with his left shoulder continuing beyond the left edge. Behind him is a rough, mottled dark surface resembling stone or tree bark; it is softly out of focus compared with his face and clothing.

The monochrome photograph has a grainy, high-contrast appearance: his face and shirt stand out against the dark background, with soft shadows defining his features and the folds of the fabric. A short, thin orange line enters from the left edge near the upper quarter. At the upper right, narrow white lettering reads “Iwan Llewelyn-Jones”. Beneath it, a compact block of yellow Welsh text sits above white English text, both set in uppercase. Beside this block is a small rectangular colour image of orange and yellow leaves against a blue background. A narrow blue strip along its right side carries red letters arranged vertically. The title and graphic overlap the darker background area, leaving the portrait unobscured.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the directness of a portrait made for an introduction: the man’s smile and steady gaze give the image an open, companionable quality, while the close crop makes him feel present rather than posed at a distance. The rough dark backdrop offers a more rugged counterpoint to his approachable expression and patterned shirt.

The restrained greyscale field is interrupted by the vivid leaf panel, which reads almost like a small window of autumn colour. Its saturated oranges and yellows suggest warmth and seasonal change, while the blue behind them lends the inset a crisp, graphic quality. The contrast between the large photographic portrait and this compact, poster-like title treatment gives the design an informal, personal character, poised between a candid photograph and a carefully arranged cover.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
