Inside the image.
The square cover combines a photograph with a stylised landscape illustration. A wide rust-red band runs across the top, carrying the artist’s name in large, widely spaced cream capitals. Below, the image is divided between a painted-looking scene on the left and a rectangular outdoor portrait on the right, with a narrow pale border around the photograph.
In the portrait, a woman with dark, voluminous curly hair sits facing the camera on a low stone wall. She wears a vivid red jacket over a dark top and black trousers, with her hands clasped in her lap and a watch visible at her wrist. Her expression is friendly and composed. Bare, softly blurred trees fill the background of the photograph, while the wall and her seated figure anchor its lower edge. The portrait occupies most of the upper-right and middle-right area.
The illustration to the left shows a green hillside or garden beneath dark, branching trees. Their trunks rise from the lower portion and spread into a canopy of mottled dark green, pale green, black and rusty pink foliage. Small light flecks and scattered orange-red marks punctuate the green ground. Its roughly stippled, uneven appearance contrasts with the smooth photographic portrait. A thin strip of the same illustrated landscape continues behind the photograph at the right edge.
A speckled, distressed-looking reddish ground frames the main picture, most visibly around the photograph and in a narrow band below the top title. Near the bottom, two long red-brown title panels with fine pale outlines overlap the imagery. The upper, shorter panel begins at the left and reads “22 O'TI CHANEON GORAU”; beneath it, the main title stretches almost the full width in large decorative lettering, “Rhowch imi ganu gwlad”. A final red band along the bottom carries the smaller cream capitals “22 HITS BY THE QUEEN OF WELSH COUNTRY MUSIC”. The lettering is tightly layered over the artwork, with the large title spanning across both the illustrated scene and the base of the portrait. The palette centres on deep and bright greens, rust red, cream, black and the strong red of the jacket; the portrait’s cool, blurred background provides a quieter counterpoint.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels like two kinds of place brought together: the softly observed, immediate presence of a seated portrait and a stylised, almost tapestry-like landscape. The photograph offers a direct human point of contact, while the branching trees and flecked greens seem to open into a remembered countryside, simplified into colour and pattern.
The red jacket echoes the warm red bands and title panels, binding the portrait to the graphic frame. Against the green scenery, that red becomes the image’s strongest note: vivid and assured, yet softened by the woman’s relaxed pose and clasped hands. The result holds a little tension between formality and ease. The monumental name at the top and the crowded, layered lettering below have the emphatic feel of a traditional record sleeve, while the candid-seeming outdoor setting keeps the image personal and grounded. The mottled illustration may suggest a handmade decorative surface, though it remains ambiguous whether it is meant as a specific landscape or simply a patterned backdrop.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
