Corau'n Canu Gwerin / Welsh Choirs Sing Folk
Dowlais Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Dowlais Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover shows a seascape beneath a dramatic, clouded sky. The horizon runs across the upper third, separating a pale, silvery blue sea from layered dark blue-grey clouds. A small opening of warm peach and muted gold light appears in the clouds near the centre. The water is softly blurred into horizontal bands, with a few dark rocks breaking the surface: a small one at the far left, a larger low rock just left of centre, and several larger, uneven rocks across the lower-left and lower-right foreground. Their dark, wet-looking surfaces contrast with the smooth, misty water. The largest foreground rocks are partly cut off by the bottom and left edges, giving the view a close, low vantage point; the distant water and sky remain open and spare.
Three groups of centred lettering sit over the photograph. Near the top, the title “Corau ’n Canu Gwerin” appears in tall, fine white lettering, with a subtle dark edge or shadow that helps it stand out against the clouds and sea. Directly below, “WELSH CHOIRS SING FOLK” is set in much larger, bold, gold-toned capitals with a dark outline or shadow, spanning most of the cover. Near the bottom, over the darker rocks, a small line in white capitals reads “CANEUON TRADDODIADOL CYMRAEG”. Beneath it are two centred gold-toned lines, “TRADITIONAL SONGS OF WALES” and “SUNG BY LEADING WELSH MALE CHOIRS”, in smaller capitals. The typography is cleanly layered over the image without a separate text panel or border.
The cover has a photographic appearance. Its subdued blue-grey palette is punctuated by the warm light in the clouds and the gold lettering. Soft, even light and the smoothed surface of the water contrast with the irregular, visibly textured rocks. The image fills the square frame edge to edge.
What the image evokes.
The scene feels suspended between a storm and its passing: the clouds retain their weight, while the thin warmth at the horizon hints at a clearing. The smoothed water makes the sea seem almost still, though the rocks suggest a restless, forceful element just beneath that calm. This balance gives the cover a reflective, slightly solemn mood without making it wholly bleak.
The low rocks and open horizon bring to mind a coastal viewpoint at dusk, with the lettering arranged like a formal title card over a landscape. The slender white title has a measured, almost ceremonial air; the broad gold capitals beneath it lend the design a more emphatic, public voice. Together, the type and seascape hold two registers: intimate contemplation in the open water and a sense of collective presence in the bold, centred words. The gold also picks up the small break in the clouds, though it reads as a graphic accent as much as a colour drawn from the scene.
