Clwb Cymru 2 (Dj Sg)
Dj Sg/alistair James
Album artwork for Dj Sg/alistair James, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square, densely layered cover centres on a large, tilted rectangular sign that fills most of the left half and extends towards the middle. Its dark face is edged with a thick, rounded metallic-looking frame. Rows of small circular lights run along the top, bottom and sides; each has a bright pale centre and coloured rings, creating the look of a lit theatre or fairground sign. Large outlined lettering on the panel reads “CLWB” above “CYMRU”. The letters are tall and narrow, with pale blue-white outlines and darker interiors, and follow the panel’s slight perspective tilt.
A huge pale blue and white numeral “2”, outlined in darker blue, occupies the right half. It sits over a hazy purple and pink background and is nearly as tall as the sign. Behind both elements, coloured beams and washes of light cross diagonally: green and yellow streaks flare from the left, while pink, violet and warm white light brighten the upper and right areas. A dark stage-light fixture is partly visible at the top-right edge. Small flecks of coloured light are scattered through the background.
Across the lower centre, the name “dj sg” appears in large, rounded lowercase letters, with “dj” in white and “sg” in bright yellow; a small “TM” sits above and to the right. The lettering overlays the bottom of the numeral and the darker area beneath the sign. Along the bottom edge is a shadowy crowd, visible mostly as heads and shoulders in silhouette, with occasional warm highlights. A narrow dark strip at the base carries three lines of bold white Welsh text. The image combines photographic-looking crowd and lighting elements with highly graphic lettering, luminous outlines and sign-like decoration. Its palette contrasts deep black and purple with vivid green, yellow, pink and blue-white highlights.
What the image evokes.
The cover evokes the charged brightness of a live venue: bulbs ring the main panel like a marquee, coloured beams cut through haze, and the silhouettes at the bottom suggest a crowd looking towards a stage. The oversized number feels almost like another piece of stage scenery, its cool blue glow setting it apart from the warmer, busier lights around it.
There is a playful clash between the sign’s orderly rows of bulbs and the loose, crossing light streaks behind it. The result has a deliberately showy, celebratory feel, somewhere between a theatre frontage and a dance-floor flyer. Yet the dark crowd and black base keep the image grounded, as if the spectacle is being viewed from just inside the room rather than from an abstract field of colour. The luminous outlines and bold scale give the design a distinctly turn-of-the-century pop exuberance, though the image alone does not establish a particular date or influence.
