Inside the image.
A square, illustrated cover with a dark olive-green ground and a large framed panel in the centre. The panel is tan, edged with narrow reddish-brown and gold lines, and partly hidden by the figures and lettering. A man and woman dancing occupy most of the foreground. The man stands to the left, in a dark jacket over a pale shirt and trousers; the woman, in front of him, wears a white blouse and a full, long orange-brown skirt patterned with small green and gold marks. Her skirt sweeps diagonally down and to the right, forming the broadest shape in the lower half. Their faces are small and simply rendered. The woman’s head is turned towards the left, with a large white cap or head covering; the man’s dark hair and pale face appear above her shoulder. Their arms meet around the centre, where a reddish-brown detail is visible, though its exact form is unclear. Their feet overlap the dark green ground near the bottom edge, with loose, sketchy strokes around them suggesting shadow or grass.
Behind the dancers, an oval, muted pink-beige cartouche sits at upper right. It contains small dark lettering arranged in four lines: “20”, “o ddawnsfeydd”, “gwerin Cymreig”, then “20 Welsh”, “folk dances”. A small white floral or star-like ornament appears near the lower-right corner of the framed panel. The surrounding green field is mottled and unevenly shaded, with a few darker strokes along the bottom.
Large decorative lettering arches across the top, overlapping both the framed panel and the dancers’ heads. It reads “CICIO’R ENEBREN” in tall, irregular serif capitals, filled with warm gold and edged in orange and dark outlines that create a layered, shadowed effect. The title curves upward at the left and descends towards the right, with letters tilted at varying angles. The illustration has a hand-drawn, painted appearance: outlines are visible around the figures and lettering, colours are slightly uneven, and fine details remain soft. The palette centres on olive green, tan and brown, punctuated by the woman’s vivid orange skirt, white clothing and head covering, and the gold-orange title.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the feel of a dance caught mid-turn: the woman’s skirt flares like a broad brushstroke, while the man’s more upright figure anchors the movement at the left. Their close, slightly tangled silhouettes make the dance seem both formal and exuberant. The oval text panel resembles a programme label set into a decorative sign, and the layered frame gives the composition a deliberately old-fashioned, handcrafted air.
The title’s theatrical arch and emphatic outlines lend it a lively, almost storybook quality. At the same time, the subdued greens and browns keep the scene grounded, like a painted panel seen in a village hall or a well-used dance room. The white head covering and the scattered bright marks on the skirt draw the eye through the image, setting up a tension between still, carefully arranged lettering and the movement of bodies and fabric. The result feels celebratory, though the softened colours and slightly worn-looking surface temper that brightness with a note of age and familiarity.
