A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover filled edge to edge with a soft-focus arrangement of broad, curved colour fields. A wide, pale yellow-green band runs vertically just left of centre, bowing gently as it descends; it separates a dark rust-red and brown area on the left from a deep plum-purple area on the right. The band is brightest near its middle and fades towards its blurred edges. Within the red-brown field, darker patches and faint vertical shifts in tone suggest an indistinct, out-of-focus surface rather than a clearly identifiable object. The purple field is similarly mottled, with a shadowy near-black patch towards the upper right and a softer violet glow below it. The image has no visible border, and the abstract forms are cropped by all four edges. The colours blend softly, with no sharp outlines or evident depth cues.

Cream-coloured lettering sits over the image in two places. “BIG LEAVES” appears at the upper left in tall, condensed, serif capitals, with a slightly irregular, worn-looking edge. At the lower right, the larger Welsh inscription “PWY SY’N GALW?” is set in similar narrow serif capitals, aligned close to the bottom edge. Both inscriptions remain distinct against the blurred background. The overall treatment is abstract and softly blurred, with the appearance of a photograph or image of indistinct forms; no definite figures or objects can be identified.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The central band might be read as a strip of light falling between dark curtains, or as a close-up of a curved surface whose identity has been lost to blur. Its yellow-green glow gives the composition a curious warmth, while the surrounding red and purple keep it shadowy and slightly uncanny. The boundary feels like a threshold: a narrow opening through which nothing quite comes into focus.

There is a tension between the emphatic, old-fashioned lettering and the elusive image beneath it. The words are crisp and declarative, but the colour fields seem to withdraw from clear interpretation. The result has the character of a half-remembered view: familiar in its broad shapes, yet hard to place, hovering between an abstract painting, a curtain-lit interior and a passing glimpse through tinted glass.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
