A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover on a warm beige, subtly mottled ground. The layout is centred and vertically stacked, with generous space around the elements. Near the top, two lines of dark brown, widely spaced uppercase lettering read “CARREG” and “LAFAR”. Beneath them is a large rectangular illustration, bordered by a broad pale cream frame. The image within the frame is dark and densely coloured, with a near-black brown background flecked by rust, ochre and muted red.

Two stylised human figures stand facing forwards on either side of a large circular motif. Their elongated bodies and heads are rendered in rough, irregular strokes of cream, yellow ochre, brown and black. Both have dark, mask-like facial features, with pale highlights around the eyes and face. Their arms extend inward across the upper part of the circle, while their other limbs curve down its sides; the figures’ lower bodies reach the bottom edge of the painted area. The circle contains an intricate interlaced knot design in gold and pale yellow, set against a dark centre. The forms are flattened and outlined, with little sense of naturalistic depth; their strong symmetry is softened by uneven contours and varied brush-like marks.

Below the framed illustration, a line of dark, decorative lettering reads “Ysbryd y Werin”. Its initial letters are larger and more elaborate, with curling strokes, and the remaining lowercase letters are slanted and joined in a handwritten style. The tan ground remains visible around and between the title, picture and lower lettering. The palette is restrained to parchment beige and cream outside the image, with deep brown, black, ochre, muted red and yellow within it. The overall image appears illustrated rather than photographic, with a visibly uneven, painterly surface and a strong contrast between the light outer field and the dark central panel.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The paired figures and central knot give the composition the air of a guarded emblem: two presences hold a shared sign between them, as though presenting it or keeping watch over it. Their nearly mirrored arrangement suggests balance and ceremony, while the rough, dark marks make the scene feel older and less orderly than a cleanly drawn symbol would. The knot’s repeated loops invite the eye to circle without finding an obvious beginning or end.

The pale border and parchment-coloured ground can suggest an illuminated page, an old print, or a small devotional picture mounted for display. That impression sits alongside the figures’ stark, mask-like faces, which lend the central image a strangely theatrical quality. It may feel folkloric or ritual-like, but the scene remains open: the figures could be attendants, dancers, or simply human forms arranged around an abstract design. The warm lettering below brings a more personal, almost handwritten note to an image otherwise dominated by symmetry and emblematic structure.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
