A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover combines a large, weathered portrait with oversized lettering. The portrait occupies the left half and extends down towards the lower edge: a pale yellow face, cropped close, with a high forehead, darkened eyes, a prominent nose and a firm mouth. Its features are partly obscured by rough, mottled marks and by the title laid over it. The head stands out against a mauve, violet and brown background that resembles a worn, mottled wall or printed surface. The background fills the frame, with no border or clear margin.

Across the upper half, the word “BRYN” is set in very large, bold, condensed capitals. The letters are pale grey-white, slightly translucent or worn in places, and overlap the portrait and background. Directly below, “FÔN” appears in similarly heavy capitals, in dark reddish brown with orange-brown patches; the circumflex over the O is prominent. Both words are centred and nearly span the cover’s width, with the lower word partly covering the face. Near the bottom, a smaller line of white, bold text reads “Y GOREUON 1994 - 2005”. The portrait and lettering have a distressed, layered appearance, with uneven colour, scuffs and grain throughout. The strongest contrast is between the luminous yellow face and pale upper lettering, and the dark lower title against the purplish ground.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The image feels like a face emerging through a wall of old posters: close, watchful and partly lost beneath accumulated layers. Its yellow light has a faded, almost archival quality, while the purples and browns around it suggest damp stone, smoke or worn paint. The immense lettering acts as both announcement and obstruction, turning the portrait into something glimpsed through a sign.

There is a tension between the monumental scale of the title and the fragile, eroded surface beneath it. The block capitals feel blunt and imposing, yet their patchy colour keeps them from seeming clean or modern. The overall impression is urban and weather-beaten, with a hint of a handmade collage or a repeatedly printed image whose edges and colours have softened with time.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
