Big Leaves
Ep artwork for Big Leaves, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover has a black band across the top and another across the bottom, framing a large, brightly coloured abstract image. The central image is made of irregular, soft-edged areas of colour: orange-red fills much of the upper left and a strip along the upper right; pale blue and lavender sweep diagonally from the upper left towards the centre, then spread across most of the lower half. A darker, mottled blue-violet area occupies the upper right. Near the centre is an uneven olive-yellow shape, flecked with dark marks and edged by deeper green-brown tones. A pink-red patch interrupts the blue near the lower right. The colour fields overlap and blur into one another, with grainy, cloudy variations across their surfaces. No definite objects or figures are recognisable.
The image is cropped tightly within the square, with no visible border separating it from the black bands. The upper band is relatively shallow and carries the title in large, narrow white capital letters, centred horizontally. The lower band is deeper; smaller white capitals spelling “TRWMGWSG” are centred near its bottom. Both inscriptions have tall, condensed letterforms with slight variation in their shapes. The hard horizontal edges of the black bands contrast with the diffuse, irregular forms and saturated colours between them.
What the image evokes.
The central image suggests a view through shifting colour rather than a scene with a fixed subject. Its broad blue sweep might recall water, smoke, or a mineral surface, while the olive patch at the centre can momentarily look like a small island or stain suspended in it. The orange fields press in from above, making the cool colours feel both luminous and enclosed.
There is a loose, tactile quality to the blurred, speckled forms, set against the strict black-and-white typography. The bands give the composition a formal frame, but the colour inside seems to be in motion, drifting across the square without settling into a stable pattern. The result balances restraint and unruliness: a plainly ordered cover surrounding an image that remains open to several readings.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
