Sarita
Tecwyn Ifan
Album artwork for Tecwyn Ifan, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a heavily textured, painterly surface. The image is divided loosely between a fiery field of orange, red and yellow on the left and a large human face on the right. The face is shown close up and turned slightly towards the left; its brow, eyes, nose and closed mouth emerge in muted brown, plum and grey tones. The eyes appear lowered or shut, though the painted texture makes their exact expression indistinct. Dark curved bands cross the lower face and neck, while a vivid magenta-purple area sits beneath the chin.
A bright yellow-orange flame-like shape rises through the centre-left, with irregular tongues reaching upwards and blending into the surrounding red. At the far left, narrow vertical streaks of green, blue and violet break through the warm colours. The right edge and upper background are darker, with maroon and brown patches surrounding the face. Across the whole cover, a fine crackled, crosshatched texture resembles a rough painted or embossed surface; the image has no separate border or clearly defined empty area.
The word “Sarita” appears near the top right in large, yellow hand-drawn lettering, with a curling accent over the ‘i’. Smaller pale yellow-green lettering reading “Tecvpm Iran” sits near the lower left; the exact lettering is somewhat difficult to distinguish. Both inscriptions lie directly over the image, without a box or panel.
What the image evokes.
The cover seems to hover between portrait and blaze. The face is intimate and inward-looking, but the flames press close enough to make it feel as though it is emerging from heat, or receding into it. That ambiguity gives the image a charged, dreamlike quality: the fire might be a setting, a veil or simply an emotional counterweight to the stillness of the face.
Its rough, crackled surface suggests something worn or weathered, like pigment on old plaster or an image glimpsed through a veil of fissures. Against this, the bright lettering and yellow fire flare with an almost theatrical intensity. The composition holds a tension between softness and severity: the face is modelled in shadow, while the left side burns in hard, saturated colour. It can call to mind a devotional portrait or a fragment of a painted icon, though the vivid, uneven palette also feels restless and modern. The picture offers no single settled mood; it is at once contemplative, feverish and slightly mysterious.
