A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

The square cover is divided into two sharply contrasting horizontal sections. The upper half is a close-up, high-contrast image of a face tilted back, seen from below and filling most of the panel. The face is rendered in deep black and saturated cyan-blue, with fine, irregular blue contours tracing the brow, nose, lips, cheek and strands of hair. Much of the face falls into shadow, so its features emerge unevenly from the dark field. The head is cropped by the top and side edges; the viewer sees no surrounding setting. Near the bottom of this blue panel, the word “GORFFENNWYD!” appears in thin, widely spaced white capitals, centred across the image. It sits just above the dividing line and is legible against the dark face.

A clean, straight boundary separates the upper image from a white lower panel. Against this open background, a botanical illustration rises from below the bottom edge: a loose cluster of green leaves, fine stems and small white flowers with pale blue-grey centres. The largest leaves sit to the left and centre, with pointed, uneven edges, visible veins and washes of light and dark green. Smaller leaves and flowers branch upwards through the middle. On the right, a brown upright stalk or woody form with a rounded top and a short lateral projection stands among the foliage; its precise identity is unclear. The plant grouping is cut off at the lower edge, while most of the right side of the white panel remains empty. The cover combines a stark, graphic blue-and-black upper image with a delicate, naturalistic, coloured illustration below.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover holds two different kinds of looking in the same frame. Above, the face seems to surface from darkness, enlarged and almost sculptural in its blue outlines; below, the flowers and leaves invite a slower, closer inspection. The hard horizontal divide makes the contrast feel deliberate, like a switch between night and daylight, or between an inward, intense presence and an ordinary piece of nature.

The upward tilt of the face gives the top panel a dramatic, suspended quality. Its electric blue and black can suggest a screen image, a nocturnal city glow, or a starkly lit scene in a film, though the image remains too abstracted to settle into any one of those associations. The botanical drawing, by comparison, recalls the patient detail of an old plant study. Its white space feels almost like a page, and the leaves seem to have grown into the cover from beyond its lower edge. This pairing leaves the overall mood unresolved: the face is forceful and shadowed, while the greenery is fragile and quietly bright.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
