Crasdant
Album artwork for Crasdant, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a large close-up portrait with a smaller group photograph. On the left, a bald, bearded man in a mustard-yellow shirt fills most of the height and extends beyond the left and lower edges. His head tilts towards the right; his eyes are closed and his mouth is open in a broad, toothy smile. The warm light picks out the creases around his eyes and the texture of his beard. His face dominates the foreground, while three men in matching dark blue or purple shirts appear behind him across the centre and right.
The smaller figures are arranged at different depths. Near the lower centre, one man sits or crouches, smiling towards the viewer and holding a long, dark, narrow object across his lap. Behind him, another man stands with a similar object angled up towards the right. At the right, a bespectacled man sits or leans beside a tall black vertical object, with one arm extended towards it; his other hand rests near his knee. The objects and the men's hands are partly obscured by the layered composition, so their exact forms are unclear. A dark horizontal surface or instrument edge crosses the lower right, with a few small, indistinct items on it.
The background is mostly bright white, with no visible setting beyond the figures and objects. The large portrait overlaps the group image and creates a strong shift in scale: the foreground face is almost the size of the cover, while the men behind it are clustered tightly together. The composition is cropped close, with no decorative border. Warm skin and yellow fabric stand out against the cool blue clothing, dark objects and white ground. The lighting is bright and fairly even, with soft shadows on the faces and clothing.
In the upper-right area, the word “Crasdant” appears in large, slender dark-blue letters. Beneath it are two short lines of smaller text: “Nos Sadwrn Bach” in red and “Not Yet Saturday” in green. The text is left-aligned as a compact block and set against the open white background, clear of the figures. The cover is photographic, with the differently scaled portraits arranged as a montage; slight softness and pixelation are visible in the image.
What the image evokes.
The enormous, laughing face gives the cover an immediate, convivial energy. Its closeness feels almost intrusive, as if the man has leaned into a group snapshot at the last moment, while the three smaller figures preserve the sense of a shared occasion. Their dark clothes and long objects lend the scene a faintly theatrical quality, but the smiles and casual poses keep it informal.
The stark white background makes the faces and clothing feel cut out and assembled, like photographs pinned together for a playful group portrait. That scale difference also makes the composition gently comic: one person seems to burst out of the frame while the others gather behind him. The title sits in a calm pocket of space above them, balancing the busy cluster with a neat, restrained typographic note. The result feels warm and welcoming, with a slight surreal lift from the collage-like proportions.
