Llanelli Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Llanelli Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines large lettering with a theatrical collage on a deep violet and indigo background. The upper half is dominated by “SHOWTIME”, set in tall, narrow uppercase letters with pale interiors, dark outlines and a reddish edge. Above it, a smaller line of orange capitals reads “CÔR MEIBION LLANELLI”. Below the title at upper left, orange text reads “the best of” and, on two lines, “LLANELLI / MALE CHOIR”.
The background shifts from dark purple at the top and sides to a paler, misty lavender glow near the centre. A long, bright, slanted shape descends from near the top edge behind the lettering, accompanied by small circular light spots. Across the lower half, pale lilac and white beams or broad triangular planes converge towards the centre, giving the impression of a lit stage. Dark blue diagonal bands cross the bottom and right, with thin lighter lines forming a loose grid.
Several theatrical images overlap across the middle and right. Near the centre is a black silhouette resembling a person in profile, set against an angular red and blue shape. To its right, a small tilted rectangular image contains a high-contrast, monochrome figure or face; its details are indistinct at this size. At lower right, a large black-and-white mask-like face with dark eye openings sits within a tilted black panel edged in yellow and blue. These elements have sharp, layered borders that make the design feel assembled from separate cut-outs.
A white oval or spotlight shape occupies the lower-left foreground, tilted slightly upwards towards the right. Red italic lettering across it lists “Songs from”, “JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR”, “LES MISERABLES”, “PHANTOM OF THE OPERA”, “CHESS” and “& other popular favourites”. The cover has no visible outer border. Its treatment is a mixture of graphic lettering, geometric light effects and photographic or photo-like cut-outs; the small inset images are too indistinct to describe confidently in detail.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the busy, heightened feel of a theatre marquee translated into a collage. “SHOWTIME” announces itself like a sign above a stage, while the slanted beams and scattered lights suggest a curtainless view into a performance space. The title’s scale gives it the role of both headline and scenery: the other images seem to gather beneath it, as if arranged for an entrance.
There is a playful tension between the polished glow of the background and the cut-out figures. The mask at lower right is immediately theatrical, but its dark, angular frame gives it a slightly mysterious edge; the silhouetted profile and the grainy inset image add further hints of drama without resolving into a single scene. The white oval, with its red slanting lettering, feels almost like a spotlight turned into a label. The overall impression is exuberant and deliberately theatrical, though the crowded overlaps lend it a touch of melodrama too.
