Inside the image.
A square, densely arranged photographic still life fills the cover, with objects packed from edge to edge and little empty space. At the centre, a glossy dark bust of a long-haired figure sits on a rectangular black plinth. It is surrounded by a collection of antique-looking objects: tall patterned feathers rise behind and to the left; a large pewter-coloured vessel with embossed decoration occupies the lower left; and a smaller metal cup stands at the lower right. Behind the bust, a broad brown ledge holds a rough, pale object and other indistinct items. A large round, dark wooden frame to the right of the bust contains a small monochrome image of three figures in hats. Another narrow, dark frame at the lower right holds a separate monochrome portrait of a person wearing a tall hat.
The lower third is crowded with a reddish-brown wooden cabinet or box. Along its top edge are two pale square blocks bearing the letters ‘A’ and ‘U’, followed by a wider pale block marked ‘R’; small yellowish objects and a short dark cylinder sit nearby. A dark, spherical object is partly visible at the bottom left. Leaves and pale flowers enter from the upper left, while feathers, carved forms, and other curios fill the background. The arrangement has several layers, with foreground vessels and framed images overlapping the furniture and the crowded backdrop.
The palette is subdued and earthy: deep brown wood, black and bronze tones, grey metal, muted greens, and the pale cream of the flowers and lettered blocks. The glossy bust and circular frame catch the strongest highlights, while the recesses between objects are shadowed. Across the upper centre, irregular white lettering reads ‘CARREZ’ and ‘LAFFEUR’, separated by a thin vertical mark. It is large and prominent against the darker background, with uneven, hand-drawn-looking strokes. The cover is a photograph, with varied reflective, worn, embossed, and rough-looking surfaces visible across the objects.
What the image evokes.
The still life feels like a cabinet of curiosities assembled without an obvious hierarchy: a bust, feather fans, metal vessels, framed portraits and letter blocks compete for attention, each offering its own small point of entry. The circular portrait frame draws the eye, but the dark bust beside it has a more imposing presence, its polished surface emerging from the crowded display like a watchful figure.
There is a theatrical quality to the arrangement. Feathers and carved forms make a layered backdrop, while the frames within the scene suggest miniature stages or windows into other rooms. The objects seem to belong to different visual worlds—formal portraiture, domestic furniture, decorative metalwork and perhaps an eccentric collector’s shelf—yet their close packing makes them feel part of one strangely coherent interior. The muted browns and tarnished greys lend the image an aged, intimate air, interrupted by the stark white title and the pale letter blocks. It can read as a playful puzzle, a private shrine, or simply an accumulation of keepsakes whose meanings remain deliberately open.
