Inside the image.
A square cover with a muted, chalky grey-and-white surface. Broad horizontal bands divide the image: a dark grey strip across the top, a wide white band through the middle, and another grey strip below. The lower grey band is interrupted by a narrow white area at the bottom edge. The transitions are irregular and softly feathered, as if the pale bands have been rubbed or brushed over the darker ground.
Large, faint outlined shapes fill the upper and lower grey areas. Across the top are three rounded, roughly oval forms, each containing a pale letter-like mark; the central one resembles an O, while the others are indistinct. More outlined forms are partly cut off along the bottom edge. Between these rows, a line of bold, uneven pale lettering runs across the lower grey band, but most of it is obscured by the rough, streaked treatment and cannot be read confidently.
The central white band carries the word “elifant” in large black lowercase serif letters. It sits near the middle of the cover, centred horizontally, with ample white space around it. The lettering is clean and sharply defined against the softer, grainy background. The rest of the design appears graphic and hand-worked, with a powdery texture, mottled marks and vertical smears that give the grey areas a rubbed, distressed appearance. The palette is limited to black, white and several shades of grey, with no discernible depth or lighting beyond the tonal contrast between the bands and text.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the feel of a fragment of public lettering seen through weather: signs, chalk marks or painted words partly erased and laid over one another. Its bands suggest a wall repeatedly marked and washed, though the image does not settle into a literal scene. The faint oval forms above and below the central strip seem almost like emblems or letters in a damaged alphabet, while the rough line of text below remains tantalisingly out of reach.
Against that visual noise, “elifant” is unusually calm. Its crisp, old-fashioned serif shapes and generous white ground create a small pocket of order, like a label pasted over a palimpsest. The contrast feels both playful and slightly enigmatic: the central word is plainly offered, while the surrounding marks keep their meaning withheld. The monochrome palette and grain lend the image a quiet, tactile austerity, but the softened edges make it feel less severe than a clean typographic design. It hovers between a printed title, a rubbed pavement inscription and a half-remembered sign.
