The upper half is a close-up, high-contrast image of a face tilted back, seen from below and filling most of the panel. The face is rendered in deep black and saturated cyan-blue, with fine, irregular blue contours tracing the brow, nose, lips, cheek and strands of hair. The hard horizontal divide makes the contrast feel deliberate, like a switch between night and daylight, or between an inward, intense presence and an ordinary piece of nature. The upward tilt of the face gives the top panel a dramatic, suspended quality.
