A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square, brightly coloured illustration shows a close-up of a harp, cropped so tightly that its frame and strings fill most of the cover. The instrument runs diagonally across the image: a broad honey-gold wooden section occupies much of the left and centre, while a cluster of long blue strings or string-like bands sweeps from the upper right down towards the lower centre. A narrower, fan-shaped area of fine dark strings is visible near the top centre, against the gold wood. At the lower left, several short dark tuning pegs project from the instrument’s edge. The lower end of the harp’s frame narrows into a blue point near the bottom edge.

The instrument is set against a flat, saturated yellow background, visible around the edges and through gaps in the harp. Its warm brown and ochre surfaces contrast strongly with the vivid blues. Black, slightly irregular outlines define the instrument and its parts; small dark marks and uneven colour boundaries give the image a hand-drawn appearance. The view is tightly framed, with the harp extending beyond the top and side edges and no visible border. There is little sense of a surrounding space or deep perspective: the overlapping shapes read as a compact, graphic arrangement.

Across the lower middle of the image, small white lettering sits over the brown and blue parts of the harp. It reads “goreuon CERDD DANT CYFROL 2”. The words are arranged on one line; “CERDD DANT” is in taller, more prominent capitals, while the other words and the volume number are smaller. The narrow letterforms are slightly irregular, and the text remains legible against the darker instrument beneath it.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The crop makes the harp feel almost abstract: broad blue diagonals, a wedge of gold wood and a row of pegs become a set of interlocking shapes before the instrument resolves into view. The image has the immediacy of a close look at a familiar object, but its scale and simplified outline also suggest a bold, cut-out emblem.

The yellow field gives the composition a sunny, almost poster-like directness. Against it, the blues seem to pull and cross like taut lines, while the warm wood brings a softer, earthy note. The slightly scratchy contours keep the image from feeling mechanically neat; they lend the clean blocks of colour a lively, handmade edge. The result is cheerful but not delicate: the harp is presented with weight and force, its strings and frame pressing across the square in a strong diagonal sweep.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
