Grym Mawl
Elin Fflur
Album artwork for Elin Fflur, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is divided vertically into two sharply contrasting areas. On the left, a narrow, almost black panel takes up roughly one third of the image. Against it is a close, high-contrast image of two pale faces, one above the other: the larger face is near the upper left, framed by dark, irregular hair or a head covering, while a second, smaller face appears lower down and to its right. Pale shapes resembling hands or sleeves overlap at the bottom. The image is cropped by the left, top and bottom edges, and its dark, mottled tones blend into the black background.
The remaining two thirds are bright white and largely empty. A red electric guitar rises from the bottom right, its body partly cut off by the lower edge. Its long, dark fretboard and pale wooden headstock angle slightly towards the upper right; tuning pegs and strings are visible. The vivid red body, with a pale central pickguard and dark fittings, stands out against the white field. There is little suggestion of depth: the portrait and guitar read as separate, flat images placed on the cover.
Large, heavy lowercase lettering fills the upper part of the white area. “grym” appears in white near the top, partly extending over the dark panel, with “mawl” in red directly below and to the right. Beneath the title, smaller black Welsh text is centred on three lines: “casgliad o”, “emynau”, and “cyfoes”. The broad white space around the guitar and below the text makes the sparse layout especially noticeable. The overall palette is black, white and red, with muted cream and brown tones in the portrait and the natural wood colour of the guitar headstock.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets two kinds of intensity side by side: the crowded, shadowy faces at the left and the clean, almost clinical openness of the white field. The portrait seems to belong to a different visual register from the guitar and lettering, as though a small fragment of a dramatic, old-fashioned image has been set beside a sharply reduced graphic design. Its dark border gives it the feel of a picture seen through a narrow opening, while the guitar appears exposed and brightly lit.
The red lettering and red guitar body echo one another across the otherwise stark space, tying the elements together without smoothing away their contrast. The guitar’s upright, slightly slanting neck gives the composition a subtle lift, like a red line rising through a quiet page. The result can feel at once devotional and contemporary: the close faces and the Welsh word “emynau” suggest a solemn register, while the electric instrument and blunt, oversized typography bring an assertive, modern graphic energy. Neither mood fully settles the image; its character lies in their uneasy, striking coexistence.
