Dai Jones
Album artwork for Dai Jones, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover combines a large black-and-white portrait with a softly coloured background. A man is shown from the upper chest upwards, filling most of the left half and extending into the centre. His dark, wavy hair is brushed across his forehead; he faces the viewer with a slight smile. He wears a pale collared shirt, open at the neck, with broad lapels. The portrait is cropped by the left and lower edges, and its right edge fades or blends into the background rather than forming a hard cut-out. The face is the main focal point, set slightly left of centre.
Behind him, the upper band is muted lavender-grey and the lower area is pale green. On the right, the green becomes brighter and more saturated, with a mottled, softly blurred appearance that suggests foliage or grass, though no distinct leaves or blades can be made out. The colour boundary runs roughly horizontally behind the portrait, around the level of his lower face and neck, and is partly obscured by him. The portrait has strong tonal contrast in the hair and facial features, while the shirt is bright and low-contrast against the background. The image has a softly blended, slightly grainy photographic appearance, with no visible border.
Large lettering occupies the upper-right area. ‘GOREUON’ appears in pale green uppercase letters above ‘DAI’, which is much larger, in white, high-contrast serif capitals. Beneath it, ‘LLANILAR’ is printed in dark blue-green serif capitals. The three lines are left-aligned and sit over the lavender and green areas, with ‘DAI’ extending across their boundary. In the lower-right corner, a small block of white text reads ‘20 O GANE UON’ and ‘GORAU DAI JONES’, followed by the English lines ‘20 OF DAI JONES’ and ‘GREATEST HITS’. The lettering is compact, with the Welsh lines in heavier capitals and the English translation in smaller, more open lettering. The text sits over the green field and remains separate from the portrait.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the directness of a keepsake portrait: the face meets the viewer without ceremony, and the smile gives the monochrome photograph an approachable warmth. Its scale makes it feel almost like a studio headshot enlarged to fill a sleeve, while the soft edges and subdued colours keep it from seeming stark.
The lavender and green divide the background into two simple fields, lending the image a gentle, almost pastoral cast. The blurred green could be read as an outdoor setting, but it also works as colour and atmosphere rather than a clearly depicted place. Against it, the crisp white name lettering has a formal, headline-like presence. The oversized ‘DAI’ anchors the design, yet the portrait remains the more intimate element: a human expression set beside a name made monumental. Together, these choices suggest a balance between personal familiarity and public recognition, without settling into either pure nostalgia or polished spectacle.
