Good News / Newyddion Da
Rhos Orpheus Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Rhos Orpheus Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a pale, cloudy background in soft lavender, blue-grey and white. A large dark indigo line drawing fills most of the left and lower portions: a stylised, seated figure in profile faces left, eyes closed or lowered, with a prominent nose and a simple, calm expression. The figure's upper body curves around a harp held in front of them. One arm reaches across the strings while the other appears to support or embrace the instrument; the long, narrow strings run vertically, ending at a curved frame. Loose parallel strokes around the hands and strings suggest movement or vibration. The figure and harp are cropped by the bottom edge, and a broad sweep of the figure's arm and body leads towards the lower right. The drawing is spare and gestural, with irregular, varying-width strokes and no shading beyond the linework.
The background remains open, especially in the upper right, where the title is set over a brighter patch of cloud. “Good News” appears in large red serif lettering, with “Newyddion Da” directly beneath in dark blue italic serif type, slightly smaller. At the lower right, two smaller lines read “The Rhos Orpheus Male Choir” in red and “Côr Meibion Orffwys y Rhos” in dark blue italics. The text is aligned towards the left and sits beside the lower part of the illustration. The overall treatment combines a simple ink-like illustration with soft, blurred cloud forms; there is no visible border.
What the image evokes.
The figure and harp give the image a devotional, almost emblematic quality: the instrument is both an object and a framework around which the body seems to fold. The closed-looking eyes and rounded posture suggest inward attention, while the splayed marks near the strings lend the still drawing a faint pulse, as though a note has just been sounded. The picture leaves the meaning open between quiet concentration and a more public, ceremonial presence.
The pale cloudscape softens the bold indigo outline, making the drawing feel suspended rather than firmly placed in a room or landscape. Its direct, economical strokes recall the clarity of a hand-drawn emblem or a page illustration, while the red and blue title lettering lends the layout a formal, almost hymn-book cadence. There is a gentle tension between the clouded, atmospheric ground and the decisive geometry of the harp strings: one dissolves, the other counts and holds its line. Together they suggest a calm, traditional visual language without settling into a single mood; the red lettering brings a touch of brightness and announcement to an otherwise hushed scene.
