The Passioun O Sanct Andraa

A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover designed as a framed typographic panel. A narrow black outer edge and a fine inner rule enclose a white ground, with a thin strip of white margin around the main design. Inside, five broad horizontal bands are divided by paired red dotted lines. Each band is filled with a dense red-and-black repeating pattern of tiny dots, crosses and lozenges; the pattern changes from band to band, with the lowest area becoming mostly plain white around the credits.

Large black lettering with pale interiors and red shadowing or outlines dominates the upper four bands. The words are arranged in an irregular, tightly stacked block: “the” at the top, “passioun” beneath it, then a single large “o”, followed by “Sanct” and “Andraa”. The letters are ornate and uneven, mixing rounded forms with pointed serifs and decorative swashes. The initial S of “Sanct” has a curling flourish, and the capital A of “Andraa” is embellished with a small blue figure-like flourish extending to the left. Pale blue and red interlaced loops continue to the right of “Sanct”; another pale ornamental loop motif sits to the right of “Andraa”. A small line below the title reads “ane kirk opera”.

At the bottom, on a mostly white ground, two lines of red lettering read “dafydd bullock” and “Jamie reid baxter”. The lettering is irregular and hand-drawn in appearance, smaller than the title but clearly prominent. The palette is restricted to black, white, red and pale blue. The image is flat and graphic, without photographic depth, lighting or shadows; its intricacy comes from the fine patterned bands and the contrasting, oversized lettering.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the feel of a page from an imagined old book: its stacked title, ornamental letterforms and dense borders of tiny patterning suggest a decorated manuscript or a piece of folk printing. Yet the forms are so boldly enlarged and tightly packed that the result also feels like a modern graphic poster, where type has become the main image.

The repeated bands give the composition a measured, almost ceremonial rhythm, while the lettering pushes against that order. Words stretch and bunch, and the looping flourishes seem to spill into the patterned space around them. The red, black and white create a crisp, slightly austere contrast; the small touches of blue bring a cooler note, like ink added to an otherwise limited palette. The overall effect is both formal and playful: an elaborate frame for language that refuses to sit quietly within it.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
