Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows a sunset over a calm, shallow shoreline. The horizon lies just above the middle of the image. In the distance, dark hills form an uneven silhouette, with a broad headland rising on the right and lower ridges to the left. A small, blocky castle-like outline stands near the centre, above a strip of pale buildings along the shore. The sky shifts from bright yellow near the left horizon through orange to muted reddish brown at the top and right.
The foreground is a reflective stretch of water and wet sand, lit in bands of gold and orange. Thin dark lines of ripples and exposed shore run horizontally across it. Several irregular black rocks interrupt the reflection: a small cluster at the far left, a large rounded rock left of centre, a low angular rock near the centre, and a partly cropped rock at the right edge. More dark stones and shallow pools fill the bottom edge. Their silhouettes and reflections give the otherwise level composition a rough, uneven foreground.
Two lines of pale lettering sit across the sky. Near the top, the smaller uppercase words “CÔR EIFIONYDD” are centred. Beneath them, “DATHLIAD” appears in much larger, widely spaced uppercase serif letters, stretching across most of the image. The lettering is light cream and stands clearly against the warm sky without obscuring the distant silhouette. There is no visible border. The image has the natural tonal transitions and fine detail of a photograph, with strong contrast between the bright water and sky and the nearly black land and rocks.
What the image evokes.
The sunset makes the cover feel suspended between day and night: the sky still glows, but the hills, buildings and rocks have already become almost featureless silhouettes. That contrast gives the view a quiet drama, as though the landscape is holding its breath while the last light passes over the water.
The lettering lends the scene a formal, commemorative air. Its measured spacing and pale colour seem to float above the hills, while the uneven rocks and rippled shallows keep the image grounded in a particular, tactile shoreline. The castle-like shape at the centre adds a faintly historic suggestion, though it remains simply a dark outline in the photograph. The result balances grandeur with stillness: a broad, glowing sky above a low, familiar edge of water, where small pools and stones catch the light.
