A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover shows a painted panorama of layered mountain ridges beneath a pale, glowing sky. The landscape fills the frame edge to edge, with no border. Dark, rounded hills rise across the lower foreground, their slopes forming a broad diagonal from the bottom left towards the higher ridge at the right. Beyond them, successive bands of hills recede into the distance, shifting from charcoal and dusky violet through grey-blue to muted brown and pale gold. Soft, hazy transitions between the ridges suggest atmospheric depth; no buildings, trees or people are visible.

The upper portion is a softly graded sky, peach and cream near the horizon and warmer beige above. A narrow line of brighter light follows the distant horizon, while the mountain layers become paler and less distinct towards it. The landscape has a smooth, brush-painted appearance, with gently irregular ridge contours and subdued tonal shading rather than sharp detail.

Large lettering occupies the upper left and upper right, set over the open sky. On the left, “Folk Choirs” appears on the first line and “of Wales” below it in dark blue-green serif letters. The characters are tall and elegant, with a slight shadow or outline that helps them stand against the light background. On the right, “CORAU” sits above “GWERIN”, then “CYMRU”, in smaller, warm brown uppercase letters with a more open, rounded sans-serif appearance. The two text blocks balance one another across the top, leaving the distant ridges visible beneath them.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The view has the stillness of a landscape remembered through mist: each ridge seems to surface briefly and then dissolve into the next. The dark foreground gives the scene weight, while the pale bands beyond it draw the eye towards the thin, luminous horizon. That recession makes the cover feel spacious without making it grandiose; the hills remain rounded and quiet, more familiar than dramatic.

The warm sky against the cool blue-grey slopes lends the image the feeling of a late evening or early morning, though the light is too diffuse to settle on either. There is a gentle contrast between the sturdy, shadowed land and the almost weightless atmosphere above it. The paired titles also suggest a measured balance: the flowing, mixed-case English lettering on the left and the stacked Welsh capitals on the right share the sky without crowding it. Overall, the cover evokes a calm, contemplative sense of place, as if looking across a range of hills when distance has softened its outlines.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
