A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square monochrome cover is filled by a high-contrast, grainy photograph. A bearded man occupies the centre and lower-left, his head turned towards the viewer and his eyes looking slightly to the left. His dark hair blends into the surrounding shadows; the strongly lit face, moustache and beard stand out in pale tones. A second face appears above and to the right of his head, angled down towards him and partly lost in the dark, mottled areas. The overlapping figures make the image feel crowded, with no clear separation between foreground and background.

The photograph is cropped tightly at every edge. Pale, irregular patches and dark shapes surround the central face, particularly across the upper half and along the left side. A narrow, bright area traces part of the man's shoulder or clothing near the bottom centre, while most of the lower-left remains nearly black. On the right, the background is darker and more textured, with a light patch near the lower corner. The stark black, white and grey tones shift abruptly between illuminated skin and deep shadow, and the image has a rough, speckled appearance throughout.

Tall white serif capitals spelling “SBARDUN” run vertically down the right side, with the letters stacked individually and read from top to bottom. Beside them, closer to the right edge, a much smaller line of white text is set vertically; it reads “CASGLIAD O GANEON” and “ALUN SBARDUN HUW’S”, with the final lettering small and slightly difficult to distinguish. The typography occupies a narrow strip beside the faces and contrasts sharply with the dark background. The visual is photographic in subject, but its extreme tonal contrast and coarse, broken patches give it an almost graphic, cut-out quality.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The image seems to surface from darkness rather than sit neatly within it. The bearded face is arresting and direct, yet the second, half-emergent face unsettles that encounter: it could be another person leaning into the frame, a reflection, or simply an overlapping fragment of the photograph. The lack of clear depth leaves these possibilities suspended.

Its black-and-white contrast recalls old newspaper photographs and stark film stills, though the grain and abrupt flashes of white make the scene feel more turbulent than documentary. The vertical title has the solemn rhythm of lettering on a memorial or a column of names, set against the intimate, unruly closeness of the faces. There is both human warmth in the lit features and a sense of unease in the surrounding shadows, as if the image were a memory partly erased and partly insisting on being seen.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.

Lettering & observation notes
  • SBARDUN — Large white serif capitals stacked vertically down the right side.
  • CASGLIAD O GANEON — Small white vertical text to the right of the large title, in the upper right.
  • ALUN SBARDUN HUW’S — Small white vertical text to the right of the large title, below the other small line.
  • The smallest vertical lettering is difficult to read; the final name appears to read “ALUN SBARDUN HUW’S”.
