Inside the image.
A square cover layers a stark, high-contrast image of two hands gripping vertical bars over a crowded collage of posters and printed images. The hands dominate the foreground: one enters from the left and one from the right, each wrapped around a dark bar. The bars run from the top to the bottom edge, dividing the view and partly obscuring the material behind them. The hands are rendered in pale pinkish white and black, with heavy shadows and sharply marked creases that make them stand out from the busier background.
Behind the bars is a patchwork of overlapping, torn-looking posters, photographs and blocks of printed colour. Red, blue, white and muted yellow areas are visible around the upper and central portions; some of the small lettering and images are obscured or too indistinct to read. A green-tinted section occupies the lower left, while a darker, shadowed image fills much of the lower right. The background has a rough, layered appearance, contrasting with the enlarged, clearly defined hands in front.
The main title sits across the lower centre, overlapping the collage. “caneuon” appears in tall, narrow red lowercase letters, with “PROTEST” directly beneath in larger, condensed red capitals. A small line of white text below reads “30 o ganeuon protest Cymraeg”. At the upper left, a compact white “2” and red “CD” form a separate mark. The red lettering is vivid against the darker and more varied background. The image fills the square with no visible border or open margin; the bars and hands are cropped by its edges.
What the image evokes.
The bars make the collage feel seen through a barrier. The hands, enlarged until they take up much of the frame, give that barrier a human presence: they seem to test its limits, hold fast to it, or simply make it impossible to look past. Their pale, almost poster-like rendering gives them the blunt immediacy of a printed protest image, while the layered scraps behind them suggest a public space covered and recovered by successive messages.
There is a compelling tension between the firm verticals of the bars and the restless jumble of posters. The title’s red lettering joins the background’s flashes of red, but its scale and clean placement make it readable amid the visual noise. The cover can evoke a collage assembled from street notices, news images and protest graphics, though the small details remain elusive. Its palette and compressed, hand-built composition feel urgent and confrontational; the dramatic shadows also lend it a darker, more theatrical edge.
