Talynau A Chan / Folk Songs & Harps
Elinor Bennett
Album artwork for Elinor Bennett, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover in a warm, faded sepia palette. A large harp fills much of the left side: its broad, curved neck enters from the upper left and sweeps towards the centre, while a thick angled pillar descends to the lower edge. Fine strings are visible behind the figure, running down from the neck. The harp is cropped by the left and bottom edges, giving it a strong foreground presence.
A woman sits just right of centre, shown from around the waist up and turned slightly towards the viewer's left. She has short, softly curled hair and wears a dark V-neck top beneath a pale, wide-strapped garment. Her hands are clasped in her lap, partly obscured by the harp's pillar. Her face is the main point of contrast against the dark clothing and instrument. Behind her, a pale open landscape stretches across the right half of the cover: low, uneven ground with scattered dark marks recedes towards a faint, nearly level horizon. The setting is lightly defined and somewhat washed out, with no visible frame or border.
The photograph and lettering share the same monochrome brown-and-cream treatment. Deep rust-brown shadows on the harp and clothing contrast with the cream background and pale highlights on the woman's face and clothes. The light is soft and diffuse, with no sharply defined cast shadows; the image has a gently faded, low-contrast appearance.
At the top right, the name “ELINOR BENNETT” appears in two lines of large, widely spaced, uppercase serif letters in dark brown. Thin horizontal rules sit above and below the name. Beneath it, smaller black lettering is arranged in three centred lines: “Telynau”, “a Chân”, then, below a short rule, “Folk Songs” and “& Harps”. The text occupies the open sky area and remains separate from the figure and harp. The cover is photographic, with a soft, slightly indistinct finish and a restrained, almost monochrome colour range.
What the image evokes.
The harp's sweeping frame gives the portrait a sense of enclosure: its dark curve hangs over the woman like an arch, while the upright pillar makes a visual boundary between her and the open shore behind. Yet the strings are so fine that the instrument does not feel like a wall. They leave the background visible, allowing the landscape to breathe through the shape.
The sepia treatment lends the image the air of a remembered photograph. It can suggest an older portrait tradition, though the pale, spacious landscape keeps it from feeling entirely formal. The woman appears composed and inward-looking, her folded hands and quiet posture set against the harp's dramatic scale. The result holds two moods together: the ceremonial weight of a large instrument and the stillness of someone waiting beside it.
The nearly empty sky gives the lettering room to sit like a discreet title card. Its measured rules and generous spacing echo the harp's long, taut lines, while the low coastal ground offers a rougher counterpoint. The image may evoke a quiet edge-of-the-world feeling, where an intimate portrait meets a wide, exposed landscape; the shore remains indistinct enough to resist becoming a specific place.
