Bob Roberts, Tai'r Felin
Bob Roberts (Tai'r Felin)
Album artwork for Bob Roberts (Tai'r Felin), provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover is divided between a large monochrome portrait on the left and a vivid green field on the right. The portrait shows an older man from the shoulders up, turned slightly towards the viewer’s right. His bald head, prominent ears, lined face, moustache and short beard are rendered in pale grey and black, with rough, scratch-like marks defining the hair, skin and dark clothing. His head fills most of the upper-left area and reaches close to the top and left edges; the shoulders are cut off by the lower boundary of the portrait section.
Behind him, the right half is filled with tall green grass or crop-like plants, their thin upright blades layered against deeper green foliage. The vegetation is brightest yellow-green near the top and more varied, darker green below. A narrow strip of pale blue-green appears at the far upper left behind the head. A dark teal-blue band spans the full width across the bottom, overlapping the lower edge of the portrait and field. Its upper boundary is uneven, with a shadowy, textured area and scattered plant-like marks extending into it. The cover has no visible border.
White lettering in the upper-right quadrant reads “Bob Roberts” in large, narrow, irregularly edged letters, with “TAI’R FELIN” in smaller capitals immediately underneath. The title sits over the grass and is aligned roughly to the left. Across the lower band, a line of condensed lettering gives the names “GYDA John Thomas MAESYFEDW”; “GYDA” is yellow-green, while the remaining words are white, with “John Thomas” larger and more prominent. A second, smaller white line below reads “MORUS ROBERTS TAI’R FELIN AC ARTHUR J. JONES”. The lettering is tall and tightly spaced, with varying sizes and weights.
The image combines a high-contrast, etched-looking portrait with a more painterly or illustrative treatment of the vegetation. Fine irregular strokes and mottled patches give both areas a textured appearance. The portrait’s black and pale tones stand out against the saturated greens, while the blue-green lower band creates a strong horizontal base and carries the smaller credits.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a face against a field with the directness of a printed portrait pinned to a landscape. The man’s gaze and the grass seem to occupy different visual registers: his features are stark, almost carved from black and chalk, while the plants flicker with colour and movement. The boundary between them is softened by the vegetation behind his head, but their contrast remains striking.
The tall, compressed lettering has a handmade, emphatic quality. Together with the rough portrait marks and the deep band at the bottom, it suggests the visual language of a local music poster or an older printed sleeve, without settling into any one period or technique. The green field feels lush and close, yet the face has a quiet, weathered stillness. The result can read as both rooted and slightly uncanny: a person set within familiar countryside, rendered with the force of a remembered image.
