Dan Amor
Album artwork for Dan Amor, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square, brightly coloured illustration shows a small rocket-like craft crossing a deep blue, star-speckled sky. The craft sits across the upper centre, pointing left: a long pale-grey conical nose narrows towards the left edge, while a rounded rectangular body and short cylindrical rear section lead to a broad yellow-orange exhaust plume that continues off the right edge. A circular window in the body contains a small, cheerful-looking figure with a pink face and yellow-green clothing, surrounded by blue dots; a red flower-like shape sits near the figure’s head. A small blue-and-white form, partly cut off by the top edge, appears above the craft, with a thin curved line descending towards it.
The sky fills most of the upper and right portions of the image, mottled with lighter blue marks and dotted white stars. Two large, sharp four-point stars sit near the top right and at the right-centre edge of a sweeping yellow band; smaller stars and dots are scattered around the craft and lower sky. Across the middle, broad, undulating bands of cream, yellow and orange curve from the left towards the right, with a white-and-red outlined cloud or planet-like shape at the left. A bright star appears where the bands narrow near the right.
The bottom third is occupied by a curving, layered landscape or landform entering from the lower left and sweeping towards the centre. Its irregular edges are picked out in orange, yellow and blue. The upper surface is green with pale spots and a darker curved ridge; behind it are lavender and white jagged peaks, with a small spray of white dots nearby. At lower right, a tilted ringed planet floats against the blue: its green-and-blue globe is encircled by a broad yellow ring dotted with orange marks.
The image is hand-drawn in appearance, with simplified, rounded forms, irregular outlines, visible brushy colour variation and fine speckling across the blue background. Bright yellow, orange, green, turquoise, lilac and white stand out strongly against the textured blue. The lighting is even and graphic, with the yellow exhaust and bands providing the strongest warm accents. At upper left, the name “DAN AMOR” appears in bold yellow capitals, followed by the smaller, narrow white word “DYCHWELYD”. The lettering is set directly against the blue sky, above and to the left of the craft.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the buoyant, handmade quality of an illustrated adventure map: its separate zones of sky, flowing bands and layered terrain feel like a miniature world assembled from vivid cut-out shapes. The craft’s leftward flight gives the composition a clear direction, yet the curving bands and ringed planet keep the eye wandering between objects rather than settling into a single route.
The design suggests an old-fashioned idea of space travel seen through a child’s imagination: a little occupant peering from a porthole, planets with decorative rings, and stars drawn as simple bright emblems. The dotted surfaces and irregular brushwork soften the futuristic machinery, making it feel playful and approachable. At the same time, the broad, unbounded blue sky and the tiny craft lend the scene a sense of distance and open-ended travel. The green landform and its jagged peaks could be read as a strange planet, a mountain range, or an island glimpsed from above; the picture leaves those possibilities in gentle suspension.
