The Impossible Dream
Dafydd Edwards
Album artwork for Dafydd Edwards, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows two people in a close head-and-shoulders portrait against a softly blended yellow-green background. Their faces dominate the upper and central areas, with the woman on the left and the man on the right. They are turned towards the camera and both smile. The woman is slightly behind him; her head sits higher and farther left, while his shoulder and upper body fill much of the lower-right foreground. The portrait is tightly cropped, with the man’s jacket cut off by the bottom and right edges and the woman’s dark clothing merging into the lower-left area. There is no separate border or frame.
The woman has short, voluminous light-brown hair with a softly feathered shape, small hoop earrings and a dark top. The man has swept-back grey hair and wears a dark suit jacket, white shirt and patterned dark tie. Their expressions and faces are the sharpest points of attention. The green background is brightest towards the upper left and right and shifts to a more yellow tone behind the man’s head. The lighting is even and warm, with gentle shading around the hair and faces rather than strong cast shadows. The photograph has a slightly soft, aged appearance, though no distinct surface texture is visible.
Several lines of lettering are layered over the portrait. At the top, centred slightly to the right, “The” appears above the larger title “Impossible Dream”; both are in pale lettering with a reddish outline or shadow. Across the lower-left and middle, “DAFYDD” and “EDWARDS” appear in two large lines of golden-yellow capitals with dark outlines and a slight dimensional shadow, overlapping the woman’s clothing and reaching towards the man’s shoulder. Beneath this, smaller pale lettering reads “Cyfeilydd” and “Menna Rhys Edwards”, followed by “Accompanist” in a smaller line. These lower inscriptions are left-aligned and stand out against the dark clothing.
What the image evokes.
The close pose gives the cover the air of a family or studio portrait: the two figures lean into the same small space, and their smiles make the image feel direct and companionable. The woman’s higher position and the man’s larger foreground presence create a gentle imbalance, as if the photograph has caught them settling together for the camera rather than arranged in a rigid pair.
The yellow-green ground and warm, softly lit faces lend the photograph a cheerful, almost domestic quality. The large gold lettering, with its dark edging, has the emphatic look of a theatre announcement or an old-fashioned variety bill. It competes with the portrait for attention, while the more restrained title at the top sits above the heads like a heading on a printed programme. The result holds two moods at once: an intimate, unpolished portrait and a formal presentation designed to be read from a distance.
