Whitland And District Male Choir
Album artwork for Whitland And District Male Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover shows a large male choir arranged in rows on a dark wooden platform, with a pale stone castle and open countryside behind them. The choir fills most of the lower half, extending nearly edge to edge. The front row is seated, with more members standing closely behind; they face the camera in dark navy suits, white shirts and ties, with small matching badges visible on several jackets. A woman in a purple patterned outfit sits near the centre of the front row. The group is framed from roughly knee height upwards, and their dark clothing forms a dense band against the lighter landscape.
Behind the choir, a broad green lawn slopes gently upwards towards a long, white castle on the left and centre. Its uneven roofline has chimneys and small turrets, and a taller, square grey stone tower rises near the right end. A low stone wall and trees continue to the right. The castle stands beneath a pale blue sky with soft cloud; at the far right, trees show bright orange and russet autumn foliage. The nearest foreground is a strip of dark brown wooden floorboards, visible below the seated singers. The landscape and building are brighter than the choir, creating a clear separation between the tiers of the composition.
White lettering sits in the open sky at the top. A bold, condensed line in capitals reads “WHITLAND AND DISTRICT MALE CHOIR”; beneath it, a smaller, fine, widely spaced line reads “CÔR MEIBION HENDY-GWYN A’R CYLCH”. At the bottom, over the dark floor and lower edge of the choir, the large word “ANTHEM” appears in pale lettering. Its slender, high-contrast serif capitals are widely spaced and span most of the cover’s width. The image is a straight-on group photograph with no visible border; the lettering is overlaid on the photograph.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the composed air of a formal group portrait, but the setting gives it a sense of occasion beyond the usual studio backdrop. The choir’s orderly rows and dark suits suggest ceremony and collective discipline; the gently rolling grass, castle and open sky soften that formality with a pastoral, almost pageant-like setting. The small variation in posture and expression keeps the gathering from feeling entirely rigid.
There is a pleasing contrast between the landscape’s broad, quiet spaces and the closely packed human group. The castle’s pale walls catch the eye first, while the dark figures anchor the foreground; the orange trees at the far right add a brief autumnal warmth to the otherwise cool sky and green field. The title’s elegant, spacious lettering lends the scene a more solemn register, as if the word were a measured final note laid across the photograph. It can suggest the grandeur of a civic ceremony or a commemorative portrait, while the unpretentious outdoor setting leaves room for a more local, communal feeling.
