Tebot Piws
Album artwork for Tebot Piws, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is dominated by a monochrome group photograph tinted deep violet and laid beneath a flat lavender-purple field. Several men stand among tall grasses or reeds, with a dense line of trees behind them. The largest figure is just right of centre, shown from about the thighs upwards in dark clothing; another stands at the far right, partly cropped by the edge. Two smaller figures occupy the left side, and a further man is lower down near the centre-right. Their faces and clothing are visible but subdued by the purple overlay and the photograph’s soft, grainy appearance. Thin vertical stems cross the figures and run up through the trees, making the image feel layered and overgrown.
The photograph fills the cover without a separate border. The figures form a loose, uneven row across the middle and lower portions, while the tree line fills most of the upper background. The colour treatment keeps the scene within a narrow range of purples: a pale, even lilac ground is visible around and over the darker photographic areas, with deeper violet shadows in the foliage, clothes and lower vegetation. A narrow vertical line of small yellow lettering sits slightly left of centre, running down from near the top edge and overlapping the photograph. It reads “Y GORE A’R GWAETHA’ O’R”.
Across the lower third, the large words “tebot” and “piws” form a two-line title. “tebot” begins at the left and is set in rounded, italic lower-case letters; “piws” is larger, extending from just left of centre almost to the right edge. Both are pale pink-lilac with a thick, irregular white outline and a slight dimensional, hand-drawn quality. The lettering covers parts of the figures and grasses. The overall treatment combines a photographic image with bold display lettering and a strong monochrome colour overlay.
What the image evokes.
The violet wash makes the photograph feel at once archival and dreamlike: a group caught in a place that seems half open field, half thicket. The narrow yellow inscription offers a sharp, almost electric counterpoint, like a thread of light dropped through the muted scene. Its vertical direction pulls the eye upward while the large, buoyant title settles heavily across the bottom.
There is an appealing friction between the photograph’s loose, natural setting and the lettering’s exuberant curves. The men appear still and serious, while the title seems to bounce, its uneven contours softening the image’s shadowy, overgrown mood. The result can suggest an old photograph reimagined as a playful poster or a memory coloured by imagination. Purple lends the scene a slight theatricality, though the reeds, trees and cropped figures keep it grounded in an ordinary outdoor moment.
