Noe! Noe!
Rhos Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Rhos Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is dominated by a large, pale snowflake pattern over a wintry blue landscape. A very large, thin, dark navy title, “Noe! Noe!”, stretches across the upper middle, with the two words set on one line and the exclamation marks rising above the surrounding letters. Near the top left, two smaller lines of white uppercase serif text read “CÔR MEIBION RHOS” and “RHOS MALE VOICE CHOIR”. At the lower left, a compact white credit reads “Gyda With :” above “Aled Wyn Davies” and “a Chôr Bechgyn Rhos Boys Choir”. The lettering overlays the snowy imagery without a border.
Behind the title, a blue-toned, hazy scene suggests a forest of snow-covered trees, fading into a light, nearly white sky. Large translucent snowflakes, formed from angular branching lines, overlap across the centre and lower half; the largest extends behind the title and towards the bottom edge. At the right edge, dark evergreen branches laden with snow enter from the top corner and midway down, framing the pale centre. The bottom and left areas are deeper blue, while the centre and upper background are much lighter. The image combines a soft, indistinct landscape with crisp, decorative snowflake shapes and sharply legible lettering.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels poised between a winter landscape and a diagram of winter: the distant trees dissolve into mist, while the oversized snowflakes are almost architectural, their branching arms spreading like crystalline frameworks across the scene. The pale centre has an open, cold brightness, set against the weight of blue gathered at the lower edge and the dark, snow-laden boughs intruding from the right.
The contrast between the enormous, elegant title and the delicate, repeating flakes gives the image a ceremonial quality. Its restrained blue-and-white palette can suggest frost on glass, a quiet forest after snowfall, or the stillness of a seasonal greeting card. Yet the layered flakes and overlapping trees keep the surface busy enough to feel less like an empty winter vista than a composed pattern. The result is both calm and emphatic: a wintry hush crossed by bold lettering.
