A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square collage assembles several photographs and drawings of a group of men and women. Across the top, a blue-tinted photograph shows six men standing close together outdoors, with dark foliage behind them. A narrow bright-blue band runs along the upper edge; below it, a fine pale line separates the photograph from the band. At the top right, the white title “Hogiau’r Wyddfa” sits over the foliage, with the smaller words “Y CASGLIAD LLAWN” beneath it. A thin green line extends horizontally behind the title area.

The lower part is divided into overlapping panels. At left, a black-and-white photograph shows a group of men seated and standing in a room; its pale turquoise border is visible along the top and sides, and the image is partly covered by the portrait drawings below. To its right is a colour photograph of four men and a woman arranged closely together. Their heads and shoulders are visible against a dark background: a man in a dark jacket at left, a bespectacled man in a pale shirt, a man in a purple top, and a partly cropped man at the right edge, with a woman in a warm-coloured top in front of them. The panel is irregularly overlapped by the drawings at its lower edge.

Several loose, white-edged portrait drawings fill the foreground. Along the lower left are two blue-toned head-and-shoulder sketches of men, one wearing glasses. A third blue-toned drawing near the centre shows a man with straight, side-parted hair. At lower right, two further portrait drawings overlap the photographs: one shows a smiling man with dark hair, and the other a man wearing glasses. At the very bottom left, a narrow black-and-white group photograph shows people seated and standing in a row; it is cut off by the bottom edge. The collage is tightly cropped, with image panels and portraits running into the square's edges.

The treatment mixes photographs in colour and monochrome with hand-drawn portraits. Blue is the unifying colour, appearing in the top image, the drawings, and the bright upper band; warmer skin tones, dark clothing, and the woman's golden-orange top punctuate it. The title is set in large, pale serif lettering, while the smaller subtitle uses compact capitals. The overlapping edges, varied image scales, and shifts between colour and black and white give the cover a dense, assembled appearance.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The arrangement has the feel of a keepsake assembled from different moments: a formal group portrait, more relaxed-looking photographs, and individual likenesses gathered together like pages from a shared scrapbook. The drawings lend the faces an intimate, handmade presence, while the photographs preserve a more documentary quality. Neither mode quite dominates; instead, they seem to remember the same people in different ways.

The cool blue wash across the upper scene gives the top row a slightly distant, almost wintry air. Below, the warmer colour photograph brings the faces forward and closer, and the monochrome images add another register of recollection. The overlapping portraits make the composition feel crowded in a companionable way, as though there is always another face just within the frame. The title's spacious, pale lettering briefly opens a calm patch above this accumulation, lending the cover a touch of ceremony amid its informal abundance.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
