Inside the image.
A square colour photograph shows a bearded man standing beside a pale horse in a leafy outdoor setting. The man fills much of the centre-right, visible from the head to below the waist. He wears a flat cap, a brown-grey checked jacket with broad lapels and buttoned flap pockets, and holds a curved-handled walking stick upright in front of him. His other arm rests close to the horse. The horse occupies the left half and faces the viewer, its long light-blond forelock hanging over its face and its pale mane falling down the side of its neck. A white halter crosses its muzzle and head; a lead hangs down against its dark body.
The pair are closely framed, with the horse's head and the man's upper body forming the main focus. Their figures overlap slightly, and the man's shoulder sits behind the horse's neck. A grassy strip opens into the distance at lower left, bordered by dense shrubs and trees. Dark foliage fills the upper background and the right edge, while lighter greenery and a small pale horizontal fence or rail appear in the far lower-left background. The horse's dark coat and shaded greenery contrast with its bright mane and the man's lighter jacket. The light is soft and diffuse, with no hard cast shadows. The photograph has a natural, slightly muted green-brown palette and visible fine image grain.
Large white serif lettering reading “TOM DAVIES” spans the top, slightly right of centre, over the dark tree canopy. Below it at upper right, smaller white lettering reads “Bariton”. Two short lines of yellow text beneath read “Cyfeilydd.” and “Colin Jones”. The title is the largest text element, in bold, high-contrast capitals; the smaller lines are tightly grouped and aligned towards the right. There is no visible border.
What the image evokes.
The close pairing gives the image the feeling of a posed portrait, yet the horse's forward-facing head makes the encounter feel direct and a little unpredictable. Its pale forelock partly veils its face, lending it a softness that contrasts with the man's composed stance, checked jacket and firm grip on the walking stick. The two figures seem at once companionable and self-contained: the man looks towards the camera, while the horse's attention is harder to read.
The deep greens and subdued browns suggest a cool, shaded garden or country lane, while the bright mane and white halter catch the eye like small patches of daylight. The lettering sits on the darkest foliage, where its bold white forms remain clear without breaking the photographic scene. The overall impression is quietly formal, but not grand: more like a carefully arranged local portrait than a theatrical tableau. The flat cap, substantial jacket and wooded setting may evoke older vernacular portraiture, though the image remains grounded in its particular details rather than any single period or story.
