Inside the image.
A square cover is filled by a close, grainy monochrome portrait of a man with short, tousled dark hair and a thick moustache. His head and face occupy most of the frame, turned slightly towards the viewer’s right; his eyes look out towards the viewer. The crop cuts off the top of his hair and the lower part of his shoulders, bringing his face close to the edges. A pale shirt collar is just visible along the bottom.
The portrait is rendered in a restricted range of deep blue-green, charcoal and silvery grey, with bright areas across the forehead, nose, cheek and the right edge of the face. Dark shadows gather around the eyes, beneath the moustache and along the left side of the head. The photograph has a rough, high-contrast, mottled appearance, especially around the hair and against the background. Behind him, a similarly dark and pale, irregular texture suggests a weathered or distressed surface, but does not resolve into a clearly identifiable setting. A narrow area at the far right is nearly white, contrasting with the dark field on the left. There is no separate frame or border.
Three lines of pale lettering sit in the upper-left corner, over the dark background beside the head. The smaller word “GOREUON” is above the larger “TECWYN”, with “IFAN” below it, aligned towards the right. The lettering is clean, uppercase sans serif, and sharply defined against the rough image. The portrait remains the dominant element, while the text occupies a compact patch of the available dark space.
What the image evokes.
The portrait feels both intimate and remote: the face is close enough to meet the viewer’s gaze, yet the coarse, cool treatment makes it seem to surface through age, shadow or photographic damage. The uneven light lends the features a sculptural quality, particularly around the brow and moustache, while the dark eye sockets keep the expression difficult to settle. It may read as serious or watchful, though the direct gaze also gives it a quiet openness.
The blue-green monochrome and scraped-looking background suggest an old photographic print or a fragment found in a wall, without fixing the image to any particular period or place. Against that roughness, the neat lettering feels composed and contemporary, a small, orderly block set beside an image that appears to fray at its edges. The result holds a tension between portrait and surface: the face seems to emerge from the texture, but also to be partly absorbed by it.
