Inside the image.
A square cover combines a black-and-white portrait with a stark two-colour background. A woman is shown from the chest up, centred slightly left and filling most of the lower half. She faces the viewer and smiles, with short dark hair and small earrings. Her forearms are crossed and rest beneath her chin; the pale sleeves and hands overlap across the bottom of the portrait. A bright, rounded detail is visible near the cuff at the lower right of the portrait. The photograph is cropped by the lower and left edges, and its right edge aligns with the vertical division in the background.
Behind her, turquoise fills the left portion of the cover, while a near-black panel occupies the right. The division is vertical and falls just right of centre. The portrait itself is monochrome, with soft grey tonal transitions in the face and clothing against the flat, saturated background. The contrast between the bright turquoise, black panel, white clothing and large lettering gives the image a crisp, graphic structure. There is little sense of scenery or depth beyond the portrait.
Large white uppercase lettering reading “SUSAN BULLOCK” spans the top, with tall, narrow, heavily condensed block letters and a subtle dark edge or shadow. Beneath it at upper right, “Soprano” appears in a smaller white italic serif style. In the lower right, on the black panel, a compact credit reads “gydag/with” above “ARTHUR / DAVIES”, followed by “Tenor”. The name is set in turquoise uppercase serif lettering, while the surrounding words are in pale lettering. The cover has no visible border.
What the image evokes.
The design sets a warm, approachable portrait against a deliberately hard-edged field of colour. The woman’s direct gaze and broad smile bring an intimate, human quality, while the large, tightly packed name above her has the blunt presence of a theatre bill or a bold newspaper headline. The contrast makes the cover feel both personal and declarative.
The turquoise and black division lends the image a modern, almost stage-like geometry: one side seems to open around the pale portrait, while the other becomes a dark column reserved for the smaller credit. The arms folded beneath the chin create a soft horizontal base, countering the upright lettering and the firm vertical split. The result balances friendliness with formality, as if a candid studio portrait has been given the composed, public-facing treatment of a printed programme. The bilingual credit adds a small visual note of cultural specificity, though the cover itself leaves its wider context unstated.
