Caneuon Gwladgarol
Côr Penyberth a John Eifion
Album artwork for Côr Penyberth a John Eifion, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is divided into two unequal vertical sections. Roughly the left two-thirds show a richly coloured painted scene, while a narrow black panel occupies the right. The boundary between them is straight and sharp, making the dark panel stand out against the loose, turbulent brushwork of the image.
In the painting, a pale, bare-chested figure rises at the centre, leaning back with both arms lifted and bent above the head. The figure’s face turns slightly towards the left, and light catches the torso and arms. Billowing white and pale green fabric wraps around the lower body and streams diagonally towards the bottom right. Behind and around the figure, broad strokes of cream, ochre, gold, rust red and deep brown suggest a swirling, cloudlike setting. A dark red, roughly textured mass fills much of the lower left foreground, while more intense red and orange brushwork frames the scene at the right edge of the painted section. The figures and forms are cropped by the cover edges; there is no visible frame around the artwork.
Large white serif lettering reading “Gwladgarol” crosses the lower middle of the painting, laid over the figure’s flowing drapery. The first letter begins near the left edge of the image and the final letters approach the black panel. On the panel, very large, low-contrast dark grey letters run vertically and are partly cropped; they are not confidently readable. Near the lower half of the panel, “CANEUON” appears in small, widely spaced gold capitals. Beneath it are several lines of much smaller gold text, set sideways relative to the main title. The lettering is too small to read confidently. The design combines painterly, softly blended areas with a sharply defined black column and carefully aligned typography.
What the image evokes.
The central figure seems caught between ascent and suspension: arms reaching upwards, body tilted back, fabric caught in a current that has no visible source. The pose and clouded, luminous surroundings can evoke a theatrical vision of flight or revelation, though the dense red forms below keep the scene from feeling wholly weightless. They offer a counterforce, as if the figure were lifting out of a turbulent or fiery ground.
The contrast between the expansive painting and the narrow black strip gives the cover a double character. The painted side is bodily, warm and unruly; the panel is controlled, almost architectural. Its oversized shadowy lettering feels like a second, half-hidden image behind the smaller gold lines. The white title, set across the swath of fabric, briefly joins these two modes: it is crisp and legible, yet embedded in the painted movement. The overall effect is at once dramatic and formal, like a fragment of an old stage tableau placed within a stark modern sleeve design.
