Reflections
The South Wales Male Choir
Album artwork for The South Wales Male Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is a bright, naturalistic photograph of a tree-lined pond beneath a blue sky. The water fills most of the lower half and reflects the trees, clouds and open sky, creating a near-symmetrical echo of the landscape across the horizontal shoreline. A grassy bank enters from the lower right and curves towards the water; another narrow green edge is visible at the left. The image has no visible border.
A large leafy tree with yellow-green foliage stands left of centre on the far bank, its crown rising into the sky and its trunk and branches partly obscured by surrounding shrubs. A line of smaller trees and bushes extends across the middle distance. Their foliage varies from pale green and gold to deeper olive, with a small vivid red tree near the right side. The water is still enough to mirror these forms, though the reflections ripple and soften towards the foreground. A few dark, low shapes sit along the distant bank, but are too small to identify clearly.
The sky is pale blue, with soft white clouds gathered above the treeline and scattered wisps towards the upper left. The pond reflects the blue and white in broad patches, while the tree reflections form darker green and brown areas. Sunlight brightens the grass and foliage, giving the scene a clear, open appearance; there are no strong cast shadows.
The word “Reflections” is placed prominently across the upper right and centre of the sky. It is set in large, sloping red script with a dark outline and a light edge that helps it stand out against the clouds. Near the bottom right, two lines of narrow italic lettering sit over the dark water and grassy bank: “Côr Meibion De Cymru” in bold white above “The South Wales Male Choir” in lighter white lettering. The lettering is cleanly superimposed on the photograph. Overall, the cover combines a straightforward landscape photograph with contrasting decorative title lettering and smaller choir identification.
What the image evokes.
The cover invites a literal reading of its title: the pond doubles the landscape, turning the tree line into a second, slightly wavering world beneath it. The reflection is not a perfect copy; ripples soften the branches and clouds, so the scene feels both composed and gently unstable. The eye moves between the large tree on the left bank and its dark, spreading counterpart in the water.
Its bright sky, lush greenery and calm water suggest an orderly, familiar countryside view, like a park on a clear day. The red title script brings a more theatrical flourish to this otherwise quiet photograph. Its sweeping strokes give the word a sense of movement, while the two modest lines below ground the cover in a specific Welsh identity. The result holds a mild tension between formal presentation and unhurried landscape: the lettering announces itself, but the water encourages the gaze to linger.
