John Ac Alun
Album artwork for John Ac Alun, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover shows two large photographic head-and-shoulders portraits against a dark, richly grained brown wooden background. The men fill most of the lower and central image, their faces side by side: the man on the left is slightly lower and set further back, while the man on the right is taller in the composition and closer to the top edge. Both look towards the viewer and smile. The left man has short, tightly curled dark hair and a full beard and moustache; he wears a white collared shirt. The right man has thick, dark, wavy hair, a clean-shaven face and a dark top with a blue collar.
The portraits’ edges fade softly into the wood rather than sitting within separate frames. The background’s vertical and swirling grain remains visible around them, especially at the sides and across the upper portion. Deep brown, black and amber tones dominate, with brighter golden-brown streaks in the wood. The faces are warmly lit, with highlights on their foreheads and cheeks; the left man’s white shirt forms a pale patch near the lower-left corner, while the right man’s dark clothing blends into the shadows below his face.
At the upper left, extending towards the centre, the names “John ac Alun” appear in large, elaborate cursive lettering. The letters are pale gold with darker greenish edging and shadowing, giving them a raised, decorative appearance. Directly beneath, a narrow curved banner carries the smaller uppercase words “OS NA DDAW YFORY” in pale lettering. Its muted gold and green-brown tones link it to the lettering and wood. The cover has no separate border; the portraits and typography sit directly over the full-bleed background. The overall treatment combines photographs with ornamental lettering and a wood-textured setting.
What the image evokes.
The wood gives the image the feel of a framed keepsake or a portrait mounted in a traditional interior, though there is no actual frame. Its dark, uneven grain sets up a rustic, almost fireside warmth, while the two softly blended portraits make the men seem to emerge from it. Their direct gazes and open smiles lend the cover an approachable, companionable quality.
The ornate script and curved banner introduce a distinctly decorative note. They recall lettering on an old-fashioned sign or a commemorative photograph, lending the design a sense of familiarity and permanence. At the same time, the close crop and saturated, shadowy background make the faces feel immediate. The result balances homely warmth with a slightly formal presentation: intimate portraits arranged with the ceremony of a small plaque.
