Bryn Terfel
Album artwork for Bryn Terfel, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover combines two photographic portraits against a dark, olive-green and black background. A large portrait fills much of the right side: a middle-aged man with short, dark brown hair and a full beard faces the viewer, wearing a black jacket over a pale blue shirt. His face is warmly lit, while his jacket and the area behind him merge into shadow. He is cropped at the chest and close to the top and right edges. On the left, a smaller rectangular photograph shows a younger-looking, clean-shaven man with wavy, light brown hair. He sits or leans forward in a dark jacket and open-collared white shirt, smiling slightly towards the camera. This inset image begins around mid-height and extends close to the lower and left edges; its dim, indistinct background appears to contain foliage.
The two portraits overlap in scale and depth: the smaller image sits in front of the larger portrait, while the large man's shoulder and dark clothing extend behind it and across the lower part of the cover. A faint oversized cursive word in muted yellow-green runs across the upper background and is partly obscured by the title and portrait. The background is mottled olive green at upper left, shifting to near-black along the right and lower areas. The overall lighting is subdued, with the faces and the smaller photograph's white shirt providing the strongest highlights. There is no visible border.
At upper left, the main title is set in white, slender serif capitals over two lines: “BRYN TERFEL” and “Y RECORDIADAU CYNNAR”. Below it, in smaller capitals, is “THE EARLY RECORDINGS”. Near the lower left, over the inset photograph and dark area beneath it, “CYFROL 2 VOLUME 2” appears in pale lettering, with “PIANO - ANNETTE BRYN PARRI” in a smaller line below. The lettering is aligned to the left. The title is crisp and formal against the shadowed green ground, while the lower text is smaller and more tightly grouped. The artwork is photographic, assembled from portraits of different apparent ages and scales; the visible transitions between the photographs and the subdued background create a layered cover design.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the air of a remembered face placed beside its present-day counterpart. The small portrait feels like an inset from an older photograph, while the larger face, held close to the viewer, is rendered with the immediacy of a current studio portrait. Their different sizes make the image feel less like a simple pair of photographs than a meeting between recollection and presence.
Olive green and black give the composition a hushed, almost theatrical setting. The face on the right seems to emerge from darkness, and the smaller image glows faintly within its own shadowed frame. The ghost of a cursive inscription behind the title adds another layer of memory: it is visible as a sweeping gesture, but its words are too obscured to read. The result balances intimacy with ceremony, as if a personal album of photographs had been arranged within the restrained formality of a recital programme. The warmth of the expressions softens the dark palette, though the scale difference and surrounding shadows leave a quiet sense of distance between the two portraits.
