Inside the image.
A square cover shows a heavily textured painting of a coastal scene. A tall, irregular stack of dark grey-brown rocks rises just left of centre, leaning slightly and narrowing towards the top. Its broad, broken planes are separated by dark seams and short horizontal marks. Lower, flatter rock forms continue towards the right, where a dark, jagged strip of land or rock meets the horizon. The foreground is a sloping expanse of pale grey and white, marked with angular strokes and scattered dark stones; it could be surf or a snow-covered shore, though the image does not make this entirely clear.
The upper half is filled by a mustard-gold sky, with broad, uneven brush marks and a few fine dark lines. The rocky stack interrupts this open area and is the main focal point. Pale foreground forms push up from the lower left and descend towards the lower right, leaving a narrow band of ochre ground or water visible at the far right edge. The palette is muted and earthy: ochre and ochre-brown dominate, set against chalky white, slate grey, and near-black accents. There are no borders. The scene is painted rather than photographic, with thick-looking, blocky strokes, scraped-looking marks, and visible changes in paint texture across the surface.
Large white uppercase lettering reading “MAN GWYN” sits in the upper right, on one line, in a slender, high-contrast serif style. Directly beneath it, smaller bold white uppercase text reads “DAFYDD IWAN”, aligned to the right. The lettering occupies the open sky and remains distinct from the painted rocks.
What the image evokes.
The scene has the blunt, weather-worn quality of a place shaped by repeated pressure: the rocks seem stacked and battered, while the pale foreground sweeps against them like a tide. Its ambiguity is part of the atmosphere. The white could be foam breaking across a dark shore, or a stark, cold covering; either way, it lends the image a sense of exposure and isolation.
The ochre sky complicates that severity. It feels dry and almost glowing, but the subdued colours and rough, broken marks keep it from becoming warm or serene. The tall rock reads as a kind of rough monument, yet its uneven outline and visibly fractured planes resist grandeur. The spare title, suspended in the open sky, adds a calm, formal note to a landscape that otherwise feels scraped and unsettled. The result suggests both endurance and erosion: a fixed mass facing a restless, shifting foreground.

Lettering & observation notes
- MAN GWYN — Upper right, large white uppercase lettering.
- DAFYDD IWAN — Upper right, directly below the title in smaller bold white uppercase lettering.
- The pale foreground could depict surf or a snow-covered shore; the image does not resolve this clearly.
