Llangwm Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Llangwm Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover has a narrow white band across the top, above a much larger, nearly black field. In the band, the orange-brown uppercase serif lettering “CÔR MEIBION LLANGWM” is centred. A thin dark line separates the band from the image below; at the upper right of the black field, the smaller white serif text “gyda Mairi MacInnes” sits just beneath it.
Two lit candles stand out against the dark background. A small candle appears left of centre, its short orange-red body topped by a bright yellow flame. Much larger, in the foreground at lower right, is a thick candle cropped by the bottom edge. Its body grades from yellow-orange around the top to orange and deep red lower down. A bright, elongated white flame rises above it, with a warm orange halo and a small dark wick visible at its base. Both candles have soft, blurred edges and glowing highlights, giving the image a photographic, shallow-focus appearance. The foreground candle is substantially sharper in its bright central glow than in its outer edges; the smaller candle is also softly blurred.
The lower image is predominantly black, with a faint brownish glow behind and between the candles. There is generous dark negative space, particularly around the left candle and across the upper part of the image. Pale yellow serif lettering reading “dilyn y fflam” stretches across the left side, level with the smaller candle and partly overlapping the space between the candles. The contrast between the pale title, warm candlelight and deep black background creates a simple, tightly framed composition with no visible outer border.
What the image evokes.
The image reduces its world to darkness, flame and a few restrained lines of lettering. The two candles suggest a quiet vigil or a shared act of watching: one burns at a distance while the larger flame draws the eye close. Their difference in scale gives the scene a slight sense of depth, though the blackness leaves the setting unknowable. The title seems to hover in that same darkness, joining the candlelight without explaining it.
The close, glowing flame has an intimate, almost domestic warmth, but the surrounding black makes that warmth feel fragile. The blurred light can suggest memory or a moment seen in low light, while the neat heading above it lends the cover a calm, formal quality. Together these impressions balance comfort with solitude, leaving the candles open to readings of devotion, remembrance or simply the steady persistence of a small light.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
