Mabsanta
Mabsant & Eiry Palfrey
Album artwork for Mabsant & Eiry Palfrey, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The cover has a pale yellow background surrounding a large circular illustration, set slightly above centre. The circle has a thick black outline and contains a cartoon scene against a blue sky. Within it, a red open-top car sweeps diagonally across the lower half, its front pointing towards the left. Several small, exaggerated figures crowd into the car: a driver in a yellow hat at the left, a bespectacled figure behind him, and a larger figure in a red cap at the right. The right-hand figure leans back, with a large white cloud of smoke or breath obscuring much of the face and upper body. A small yellow light bulb on a thin stem rises near the centre of the scene. A dark, narrow object and a few small signs or scraps appear near the circle’s upper-left edge; their details are difficult to make out. Short white marks and pale blue shapes in the sky suggest clouds or motion.
The drawing uses bold black outlines, flat areas of bright colour and irregular, hand-drawn contours. Red and brown dominate the car, with blue behind it, yellow in the background and accents, and white in the large puff and smaller sky shapes. The figures’ limbs, hats and faces overlap one another, making the scene feel crowded and lively. The circular picture is bordered by open yellow space, with the most substantial margin below it for the lettering.
At the top inside the circle, the large lowercase word “mabsanta” appears in widely spaced red letters. Directly beneath it, in much smaller dark lettering, is “mabsant & eiry palfrey”. Across the bottom of the yellow field, a large turquoise-blue line reads “Hwyl a Chân yr Hafa’r Gaeaf”; below it, in black italic lettering, is “A Feast of Welsh Humour and Song”. A thin red horizontal band beneath these lines contains small, spaced white lettering reading “GYDA WITH”. The lowest line is black, bold and italic, reading “DYLAN THOMAS, HARREB WEBB, IDRIS DAVIES et al...”. The cover text is aligned centrally and forms a stacked caption beneath the circular cartoon.
What the image evokes.
The circular frame gives the scene the quality of a little stage or a comic window. Inside it, bodies and objects seem to spill into one another: the car cuts across the circle, the figures lean at improbable angles, and the immense white puff interrupts the blue sky. The result feels less like a carefully ordered narrative than a snapshot of a commotion caught at its most ridiculous moment.
The bright, blunt colours and elastic outlines suggest the accessible immediacy of a printed cartoon or a hand-drawn comic cover. The pale yellow field lends the image a warm, almost sunlit air, while the dark rim around the scene keeps that brightness contained. There is a playful tension between the neat, formal stack of lettering below and the unruly tangle above. The lettering promises a composed presentation; the picture answers with movement, exaggeration and a touch of chaos. The large puff could read as smoke, breath or a comic flourish, and its ambiguity adds to the sense that the scene is suspended between an everyday mishap and a cartoon daydream.
