A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

The square cover combines a mountain-lake photograph with a large group portrait. Across the lower foreground, several rows of men stand shoulder to shoulder on a pale strip of shore or path, facing the viewer. Most wear black suits with white shirts and dark ties; a few appear to wear lighter jackets. The front row is larger and more distinct, while the closely packed rows behind rise in a shallow arc. The group spans nearly the full width of the image and occupies its lower third, with a narrow margin below their feet.

Behind them, a calm blue-grey lake stretches across the middle distance. Low, dark-green wooded shores border it on both sides, and steep mountain slopes enclose the water. The slopes are green and grey, with patches of exposed rock and lighter ground; a central valley recedes towards distant, hazier peaks. The sky takes up much of the upper portion, pale blue with soft, diffuse clouds. The landscape is brighter and softer in the distance, while the foreground group is dark and sharply contrasted against the light ground and water. The image has no visible border.

Three centred lines of title lettering sit over the sky near the top. The largest reads “Cantorion Colin Jones” in pale lettering with a dark shadow or outline, in a prominent serif style. Beneath it, “The North Wales Male Chorus” appears in smaller blue italic lettering, followed by “Côr Meibion Gogledd Cymru” in a similar, slightly smaller italic line. Near the bottom, below the men, “IN CONCERT - MEWN CYNGHERDD” is set in large white italic capitals with a dark shadow, following a gentle upward curve. The typography overlays the photograph, leaving the mountain scenery visible around and between the lines. The image is photographic in appearance, with no obvious drawn or painted elements.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover sets the formality of a group portrait against the openness of a mountain landscape. The men’s dark suits make a firm horizontal band, almost like a human shoreline, while the lake and valley draw the eye inward and upward towards the distant gap between the peaks. That contrast gives the scene both a communal, ceremonial quality and a sense of spacious calm.

The arrangement has the directness of a traditional concert or society portrait: everyone faces forward, the rows are carefully gathered, and the lettering announces the group plainly. Yet the grandeur of the setting lends the image a more expansive, almost civic character. The high peaks suggest scale and permanence; the neatly dressed figures offer a measure of human warmth and occasion within it. The soft sky and muted greens keep the effect gentle rather than imposing, like a formal gathering paused during a bright day outdoors.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
