20 Of The Best From Cor Godre'r Aran
Cor Godre'r Aran
Album artwork for Cor Godre'r Aran, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover with a narrow white border around a large, colourful painting. The upper band is mostly white and carries the lettering; the image begins just below it and fills nearly all the remaining width, ending above a short white strip at the bottom. There is no clear horizon or single central subject. Instead, the painting is a dense arrangement of overlapping, irregular forms and marks, with bands of colour running across the lower half and larger, loosely defined shapes above.
The upper part of the painting has broad areas of blue, turquoise, grey and pale green, interrupted by vivid yellow and violet patches near the top right. The forms are indistinct: some suggest rounded or folded shapes, but none resolves clearly into a recognisable object. Across the middle, narrow dark outlines and streaks of white, red, orange, green and blue overlap in a roughly horizontal, broken sequence. The lower half is especially crowded, with vivid yellow, red, green, turquoise, blue and black forms layered into uneven bands. Small circles and dabs of colour appear among them, including a cluster of purple and blue marks just right of centre near the bottom. The painting’s edges crop the forms on every side.
The surface has a visibly painted, rough-edged appearance, with uneven colour fields, sketchy dark contours and scattered flecks. Some areas look brushed or smeared, while others are built from short, abrupt strokes. The colours shift sharply from one patch to the next; dark lines and outlines separate some forms, while elsewhere colours run into one another. There is no realistic lighting or cast shadow, and the overlapping marks create a shallow, busy sense of depth rather than a naturalistic scene.
In the white space above the painting, the large blue title “Côr Godre’r Aran” is centred and set in prominent serif lettering. A small, narrow turquoise word, “GORFFON,” sits above the title towards the right. Beneath the title is a smaller gold uppercase line reading “20 O THE BEST FROM CÔR GODRE’R ARAN CHOIR,” aligned across the cover; the initial number and following words are clearly visible. In the lower white strip, the turquoise dates “1983-2003” sit at the right. The text is neatly arranged and sharply legible against the white, in contrast to the energetic, crowded painting below.
What the image evokes.
The painting feels less like a window onto a place than a surface in motion. Its broken horizontal bands might suggest a landscape glimpsed through shifting water, or a crowded jumble of coloured objects seen from above, but the forms keep slipping between those readings. Dark outlines briefly give them structure, then the colour spills past and loosens it again.
There is an appealing tension between the ordered white frame and the unruly image. The title and dates sit with measured clarity, while the painting seems to refuse a fixed centre or hierarchy: the eye wanders from the cool blue expanses at the top into the hot, tightly packed streaks below. Its bright palette can feel playful, yet the overlapping marks and uncertain shapes lend it a restless, slightly turbulent mood. It invites looking as a kind of visual wandering, with each pass finding a different arrangement in the same dense field.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
